You do know that is because cases take time to diagnose, so what happens is they end up bundling them up.
There is always a balancing act whether you want it or not. There are severe costs associated with the lockdown, that will end up killing people. People are quite capable of tolerating risk, elsewise people wouldn't drive. If I look at the situation here in South Africa, there is likely going to be widespread riots because of the lockdown as people in this country are already living in dire poverty and will be further plunged into depending on a useless government.
Japan and South Korea didn't need to lockdown because they tested quickly and managed to get most people wearing masks as they are pretty paranoid about hygiene there. If the point of the lockdown is to buy some time to get the country into a state where supply chains are strong enough to cocoon the elderly and vulnerable, then I think it would be worth it. That seems like a reasonable criteria to me. If the point of the lockdown is to simply restrict the spread in and of itself, it isn't going to end well.
Gotta fund dem wind turbines, because wind power is how we beat a pandemic.

Well here's a thought experiment: let's go to Italy and tell the people that their lockdown has gone on long enough, the economy just can't sustain it and they need to tolerate the risk and get back to work. Sure it will expose most of the population to the virus and they have a chance of getting very sick, infecting their elderly relatives and children, maybe end up in hospital drowning in their own lung fluid, or worse yet just dying at home because the hospitals have no more space for anyone. Do you think they would be receptive to your message of economic supremacy?
Yep, both dems and reps worked together to put it all together over weekend, a package that the world looks at and says oh my gawd I want that... then pelosi flies in on monday(oh the irony of her airline emissions addition) and shits all over the place like the chess pigeon and suddenly its all in the shitter... there wont be many airlines or corporates to diversify left thanks to her

So once all of these factories etc are locked down for months, where are these face masks and other goodies you are demanding going to come from?
What are people going to be eating when there is nobody producing food. No fuel etc.

Food and medical equipment, last I heard is essential and workers in that area are considered essential workers and not affected.

I can already see on my social media and news reports that Trump is priming his base to open up and end this lockdown. You can already see the DOW reacted with increases. This monster cares about the economy and he will learn how short sighted this decision was once the #'s start ramping up and the hospitals become overrun.
Thank god state governors can put their own rules in place, this damn moron is prolonging this pandemic.

Where do you think everything comes from? Oh right, you can just tell a government dept to make it and it will be so.
Lets say you keep "essential services". Lets say like an ambulance.
Well that ambulance is eventually going to break down as it is just a machine. It needs tyres, oil and parts.
So now are you going to allow tyre shops to open?
That is fine, it is just one type of shop.
Then you find that the tyre shop needs tools and parts from the supply chain that are also locked down, so you have to unlock those as well.
Now come payday, surely you would think that the staff doing all this stuff should get paid right? And they pay Caesar his due? Well you need accountants for that.
They burn through paper quicker than a soccer mom panic buying for a pandemic. So you are going to have to unlock that part of the supply chain as well.
Said accountants are going to be working through winter, which means that they will need heating. Which does need maintenance. Well if those parts are not part of the supply chain, they won't be able to do their work very well.
I can go on and on.

Economies can shut down for a bit because they have reserves and stockpiles. But there is a time limit on it. And I think they are more fragile than people like to admit.
You deliberately ignored what I said. I never said just let things go back to normal. I said this:
If you take the vast amount of resources that are being made available to counter the economic damage, I would recon you would better spend that by providing resources to the vulnerable such that they are less likely to get sick. If you need a bit of a lock-down to get that in place, then that is reasonable. But you cannot shut people in their homes forever.
South Africa is going to be a petri dish to show the world what the economic damage of the lockdown will be.

Yeah you just described the crisis in which America now finds itself because of Trump's prolonged inaction. There is no easy way forward. All I can promise is, if you try to keep businesses open it's going to make the situation far, far worse than it is already going to become. A pandemic should basically be treated as a wartime event, and all the nation's resources need to go towards combating it. Unfortunately Trump still seems incapable of grasping that fact and appears resolved to plunge the country into hell in a week.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo pushed back against comments by President Trump that he could reopen the US economy while keeping an eye on some of the most at-risk populations, including seniors.
“My mother is not expendable. And your mother is not expendable. And our brothers and sisters are not expendable,” Cuomo said. “And we're not going to accept a premise that human life is disposable. And we're not going to put a dollar figure on human life.”
Cuomo said saving lives is most important, but there can be an “intelligent” strategy for getting people back to work.
Some more background: Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, 70, said Monday that he is "all in" on lifting social distancing guidelines in order to help the economy.
“Let's be smart about it, and those of us who are 70+, we'll take care of ourselves. But don't sacrifice the country,” he said.
His suggestion directly contradicts recommendations put forth by government agencies and experts.

The US economy has the resources to cope with the virus because they have a government that sort of understands how economies work. South Africa doesn't have those resources because it has communists in government who don't understand how economies work. It makes 0 difference how sincere they are.
And you also failed to see how nice and kind Ramaphosa is to people who disagree with his government.
The UK changed its policy on dealing with the outbreak because of pressure from the media. In South Africa, if you post an argument that states why the government is wrong, they will arrest you.
