I suspect the virtue signalling for all those who are already in poverty, who are facing further economic hardships with the lockdown, will evaporate once the lockdowns are lifted?

Because prior to the lockdown I had never seen such concern expressed for those stuck in poverty?

My reasons are exactly the same, I detest poverty. Hence why I only support policies that result in the decrease in poverty. Which is why I only support free market capitalism, as that has the most evidence for decreasing poverty.

The opposite of free market capitalism increases poverty.


Leftists don't give a toss about poverty. All that matters to them is inequality. They would rather have the poor be poorer and have the gap between the rich and poor be smaller.

It is why the ANC/SACP expressly reject things like IMF bailouts. They would rather South Africans starve than dare have those evil liberal policies of economic freedom.

If you're going to keep throwing out nonsense like that, expect to not have anything resembling a serious debate.

For what it's worth I tend to agree with you on a lot of things, but the thing that frustrates me most is the inability of free-market capitalists to make any inroad into a mixed economy, declaring anything that deviates from pure capitalism as socialism/communism.

It is the simple reality of living in a country where the government cannot even do the basic business of running a competent police force. I have a problem with central planning aspect of large governments, determining what people need and don't need because they simply will never have the information to decide what people need and what they don't. This is why I am against all form of socialised healthcare, in the same way that I am against the government deciding what is an essential service and what isn't.

What you would probably be quite happy to know is that I do think there is a place for government in fighting poverty, even I dare say in some form of welfare. This is why I have repeatedly stated that one of the better aspects of South Africa's welfare state is that the childcare grant is simply cash based. Which allows people to buy whatever they think they need.

To use the healthcare insurance example, just because I think that premiums people pay should be based on the risk they present to the system, doesn't mean that I don't think that there shouldn't be a means tested voucher available for people to help pay for some insurance. I just don't want some retard sitting in Pretoria deciding what goods I can and cannot pay for. That is what you get when you socialise healthcare.

Mixed economies imply that the state is more capable of spending money for the benefit of people than people themselves. It isn't true in any economy in the world. Calling it a mixed economy implies that the likes of Cyril Ramaphosa, Donald Trump and Boris Johnson know more about what people need than individuals themselves.
