Sorry - amongst our debate, it seems the threads on registering a US account have been lost.

1) I preferably don't want to create a new account - and would rather have my current Apple ID changed to USA.
2) I don't have iTunes with me - can I change my local to a USA one on either the iPad or the net

Regarding 2, I have tried - but it seems I get stuck at the billing details not matching because we can't buy on the card etc etc How do I bypass or delete billing info?

As far as my knowledge goes, this cannot be done. That's why I had to create a new account. Thank heavens I didn't buy much on the SA account yet.

Can the switching be done at home?

I've bought a magazine subscription and Garageband on my SA account .... and I think managing only one account would be better than having both. Also my current Apple ID is my primary address

Google is your friend? I know next to nothing - but have been doing plenty of reading the last few days - and I recall seeing a thread on the actual Apple website that allowed for a change in account details. Have a search - pretty sure you will find something...

Common sense tells me that they must allow for this possibility? Otherwise, would it mean someone in the US, who moves to Europe/UK etc., has to open a new account and lose access to everything they've ever bought/downloaded? Surely that can't be?

Go to appleid.apple.com and change Country.
Then in iTunes (Yes, you need to do it through iTunes), set you billing as a no-card setup

Of course it can be done but you have to have a valid credit card from that country. If you do not, then the is no way to change your country without a valid credit card. That is what I meant by 'it's not possible'

You wont be able to carry your purchases with you to the USA account. They will be linked to your account in SA.
The reason for this is that most media publishers (Music in particular) make it illegal to carry music cross borders

Ahhhh... That makes sense. Told I know next to nothing! :p

I switched to Kenya - seems they carried over.

Better than nothing I guess!
