US politics general thread

We're talking about Kavanaugh's innocence or guilt here, not anyone else's. Let's stick to the point shall we?

I am discussing both, because both are relevant, unless you are here to push intersectionality and virtue signal.

Edit:

Can you agree that women not coming forward when witnessing sexual assault on others and attending parties where crimes are being committed is bad judgement?

Can you agree that we should be having this discussion with our children as they grow up in order to instill such morals in them?

Only one point is relevant, and that's whether Kavanaugh did the rapin' and the gropin'.

Yeah. Like I suspected. You are just in it for the outrage and to virtue signal.

Actually, this is a very ironic reflection of current American politics. I should not be so surprised. Disappointing.

This is a politics thread, the relevant point is whether her claims are true and how it reflects on Kavanaugh's character and whether he is suitable for a lifetime Supreme court appointment.

Like I suspected, you don't give a **** what Kavanaugh did and you just want to derail the thread away from the topic to anything that distracts from the fact that you're defending the Supreme Court appointment of a raper and a groper.

This is so absolutely ridiculous I cannot believe you posted it.

So, you want to cite politics when everyone here has been so morally outraged at the Republicans playing politics with Kavanaugh? The hypocrisy is astounding.

Speaking of outrage and virtue signaling.

Kavanaugh's career is over. Do I need to do a dance for you to show you that I am pleased about a man's life ending? He is getting his just desserts. So is his family. What more do you want? Do you want this man publically flogged or hung?

Discussing how we can avoid this pattern from coming out in the future shows that I am actually interested in making sure the cycle of abuse breaks. Your interest in not discussing just signals you want to be part of the moral outrage gang.

Don't be obtuse - Like it or not, supreme court appointments have been political for ages - in a perfect world they wouldn't be. End of the day what his accuser did or didn't do in terms of her reporting the rape is irrelevant to the point of whether or not a potential supreme court justice is fit for the position.

Pointing out hypocrisy is not virtue signalling. I called out both the Republicans and Democrats political games pages back. I pointed out that justice is impossible. Shall I post them for the third time for you to see because you are not paying attention?

Anyone?

I just want him not to be appointed to the Supreme Court if he is guilty of the things he's been accused of. Unfortunately, the nomination process is still going full steam and he's got Trump and McConnell's full backing and they've given no indication that they have any intention of investigating the new allegations, which are far worse than even Ford's.

This thread is not the place for it. If you want to have a discussion on ending rape culture, start a thread. Otherwise it's just derailing and deliberate obfuscation.

How about we don't tell woman what they should do after becoming victims of sexual assault? In theory, yes all woman should come forward, name their assailant and get justice but that isn't how the world works... Some people's way of dealing with assault is to put it behind them and try to move on with their lives without the humiliation and exposure that reporting these crimes brings.

You think we should just sit back and let victims carry on trying to deal with assault in silence, but then try and provide them justice 3 decades after the fact? Don't you think we can have a rational debate in order to influence the culture of non-reporting into one of open discussion which seeks timeous justice and a level of personal responsibility to others?

If your daughter was gang raped at a party, and her friends says to you "oh, I knew about those gang rapes, but I kept going with your daughter", it would just be ok? How about we teach our children to be comfortable with talking about and sharing these things with their parents and adults in their lives so our grand children do not grapple with these issues?

You don't want to discuss it openly because it makes you uncomfortable, and walks a very grey line of victim blaming. You don't want to be labelled a victim shamer, or bigot, or whatever is the latest insult, so you just avoid it. Former generations did not openly discuss sexual assault because it was not acceptable to do so. You are doing the same thing.

cerebus, I do not take direction from you so do not try give me instructions in any form or manner. I am free to express whatever opinion I want as long as it fits within the rules of this forum. These issues will be raised in the Senate hearing, and is therefore applicable to US politics. I refer you to the thread title. Stop trying to shut me down. If you feel I am incorrect, report me to the moderators. I will graciously accept whatever comments they make if they deem it necessary.

If they choose the later option of not wanting justice, then that's fine, but then they shouldn't come out of the closest years later when it is politically convenient.

I didn't say that, sure encourage people to come forward by all means but don't blame them if the 't behave in a manner that doesn't live up to your expectations of how a sexual assault victim "should" behave.

Please don't put words in my mouth, I have no issue discussing it in the appropriate forum

Why does justice have a shelf life? Is it that unfathomable that a person might be willing to move on from a crime against them but then decide that the person who did it shouldn't be in a position where their ethics and morality will shape the country for years to come?

Because human memory is fallible even when they are fresh in our minds!
Traumatic incidents tend to stick with you - I can still remember the particulars of splitting my head open when I was 7, also the car accident i was involved in when I was 10 - some of the details might have been lost but the incident itself is very clear.
