The Real Price Tag for Republican Tax Cuts 2.0

House Republican leaders said Wednesday that they plan on releasing legislation for a second round of tax cuts next week and voting on it this month.

The cost of making permanent those individual tax cuts, including a 20 percent deduction for passthrough business income, would be an additional $627 billion over the 10-year budget window, according to estimates from Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation. Extending the individual income tax cuts set to expire after 2025 would cost $522 billion over that time.

But analysts noted that the real long-term costs would be much higher, since the JCT estimates only factor in the cost of the tax cuts for three extra years beyond when they were set to expire. The liberal Center on Budget and Policy Priorities(CBPP) estimated that the individual tax cuts would cost about $2.8 trillion over the first ten years of being permanent (that is, 2026-2035), or about $3.3 trillion over the next 10-year budget window (2029-2038). An analysis published in April by the Penn-Wharton Budget Model found that “extending the individual-side (non-business) tax cuts increases government debt by over $5 trillion by 2040 and actually reduces GDP during the first 10 years and beyond.”

President Trump allegedly suggested to his chief economic adviser last year that the government should print more money to help eliminate federal debt, according to an excerpt from Bob Woodward’s new book.

The veteran Watergate journalist wrote in his new book — “Fear: Trump in the White House” — that Gary Cohn, the now-former top economic adviser, told Trump that the Federal Reserve was likely to increase rates during his first term in office, in an excerpt first reported by Business Insider.

“We should just go borrow a lot of money, hold it, and then sell it to make money,” Trump reportedly said in response.

Cohn was “astounded” by the president’s response, which he reportedly said illustrated a “lack of basic understanding” about how federal debt works.

Trump, who was the president-elect at the time and had promised to wipe out U.S. debt in eight years, reportedly offered a solution: “Just run the presses — print money.”

Woodward wrote that Cohn then went on to explain how printing more money is thought to lead to inflation and could be catastrophic for the fiscal health of the U.S.

"It was clear that Trump did not understand the way the US government debt cycle balance sheet worked," Woodward wrote.

So is his “I personally helped in the rubble” thing.

It has been used to attack him but, you know, muh economic anxiety.

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration took nearly $10 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's budget this summer to help boost U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to budget documents shared with USA TODAY.

The revelation, just ahead of Hurricane Florence's expected landfall in North and South Carolina, was found by Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., who first shared the documents live on MSNBC late Tuesday.

He told USA TODAY that after the devastation of last year's storms, including hurricanes Maria, Harvey and Irma, FEMA should have the funds it needs to be prepared for another disastrous hurricane season.

"It's almost guaranteed to happen again, so this is just incredibly irresponsible," Merkley said.

The budgeting document, titled "Department of Homeland Security FY 2018 transfer and reprogramming notifications," lists $9,755,303 taken from FEMA's budget, about .9 percent of the agency's listed overall budget, and given to support ICE.
