Police officers fatally shot a 27-year-old Black man armed with a knife during a confrontation Monday afternoon in West Philadelphia that quickly raised tensions in the neighborhood.

Late into the night, growing anger turned into a violent standoff at the local police district headquarters with several police officers injured by bricks or other objects hurled from the crowd. Late Monday into early Tuesday, police struggled to respond to vandalism and looting along the commercial corridor of 52nd Street. At least one police vehicle was set on fire and destroyed.

The episode began shortly before 4 p.m., police said, when two officers responded to the 6100 block of Locust Street after a report of a man with a knife. Family members identified him as Walter Wallace Jr.

A video posted on social media showed that Wallace was an undetermined distance from the officers and appeared to be multiple feet from them when they fired numerous shots. The video depicts Wallace walking toward the officers and police backing away. The video then swings briefly out of view, and in that moment, police fire at Wallace.

Apparently in a statement to the press the dad said they could've tasered him but we know that isn't guaranteed to stop a determined assailant.
 
Wow I see the looting by Black Looting Matters is out of control in Philadelphia. They're looting every store and business they can find including pharmacies.

More cops have also been run over and attacked, antifa have arrived to support Black Looting Matters and several people have been shot. All this because another violent black dude who charged at cops with a knife was shot. Not that they care about the guy. They only care about getting some free stuff. They can't wait for another black guy to get shot so that they can go loot and destroy.

By the sounds of things the cops may have been dispatched without knowing what they were dealing with.

Police were called dozens of times in recent months about problems at Walter Wallace Jr.’s home, and had responded twice on Monday to reports of disturbances at the West Philadelphia house before two officers answered a third call and shot him as he approached them with a knife, according to law enforcement sources.

What happened during those earlier visits — including which officers responded and how much they knew about Wallace’s mental health problems — remained unclear Tuesday. Asked at a news briefing, Commissioner Danielle Outlaw declined to offer details about prior contact police had with Wallace, saying the incident remained under investigation.

But the confirmation of previous visits, by sources not authorized to publicly discuss them, fueled growing questions about the police response to what Wallace’s relatives have described as a mental health crisis.

A lawyer for Wallace’s family, Shaka Johnson, said that before the shooting, relatives had called 911 asking for an ambulance — not police officers — to help mitigate the 27-year-old’s spiraling condition. Calling the shooting “unjustified,” Johnson said that Wallace’s pregnant wife had told officers when they arrived that her husband had bipolar disorder.

In this case the family is 100% to blame.

They should have had him institutionalized, they can't call the cops 3 times a day.

They can't, because well-meaning people like JFK have effectively gotten rid of mental health care.

And yes, this is one of the places I actually think the government has a role to play in, as people with genuine mental health problems cannot function in society.
