Prosecutor Misspoke In Saying Adam Toledo Had Gun In Hand When He Was Shot Dead By Police, State's Attorney's Office Says

A spokeswoman for the Cook County State's Attorney's office said Thursday that a prosecutor misspoke over the weekend in saying 13-year-old Adam Toledo had a gun in his hand when police shot and killed him.

At a bond hearing Saturday for Ruben Roman, 21 – the man who was with Adam Toledo – prosecutors said Adam had a gun in his hand when an officer shot and killed him.

Prosecutors said while defendant Ruben Roman was the one to fire the gun, Adam was holding it when he was shot and killed by police at a point when Roman was already being detained.

Prosecutors said this weekend that Adam turned toward the officer, and it turned out he had a gun in his right hand, prosecutors said. The officer ordered him to drop the gun, prosecutors said.

When he did not, the officer shot Adam once in the chest

That frame is literally less than a second after @konfab.
In less than a second the boy goes from holding a gun to dropping it and moving his hands up. Policeman got skrik, shot.

Now, my issue is that he told the boy to show his hands, boy dropped it (out of sight of the policeman) and showed his hands, but cop still shot.

If the cop never said that and the boy did what he did, OK good shoot. But you told the dude to show his hands, but shot him when he did.
As I already said, I can understand why he shot since I assume the cop didn't realise the gun was dropped.

All this happens in less than a second.

If you're going to tell someone to show their hands, you have to be prepared for when they do.

If you go and look at the video it is very clear.

Runs away from cops with gun in hand.

Stops, puts his back towards the cops. Cop can see he is deliberately trying to hide the gun behind his back.

Didn't watch the video. Just commenting on the empty or failure to extract/eject.

There will be plenty of in-depth analysis on this later so, just like with Floyd, I'll rather not make judgements based on grainy images and incomplete reports.

Prosecutors said nearby surveillance video captured the moment Roman fired shots early on the morning of March 29 at a passing vehicle while Adam stood next to him at 24th Street and Sawyer Avenue.

After firing the shots, Roman ran north with Adam on Sawyer and ducked into an alley near 23rd Street, where officers spotted them about a minute later, Murphy said.


Prosecutors indicated the Ruger 9 mm handgun that fell from Adam’s hand had previously been used by Roman. It matched the seven shell casings that were later recovered at the site where Roman fired the initial shots, Murphy said.

Adam’s hand later tested positive for gunshot residue as well, prosecutors said.

The police were only responding to these two upstanding citizens firing guns into traffic.

His buddy did, the 13yr old ran with the gun, was it immediately obvious on arrival who did what? Hindsight is always 20/20

Using a taser against an opponent you know has a gun?
That is a sure fire way to get killed.

If you look the events leading up to it, which is what the officer had to make a decision on, he did exactly what he should have done.
