US reached debt ceiling...again

Running on the promise that you will end thne wars does not mean you can just walk out of Iraq and Afghanistan on day 1...unless one is in an idealistic world like most posters are.

Bush sent the troops their, both countries ended in a worse mess than before meaning that a withdrawal could only happen after more spending.
Bush also presided (if one can call it that) over the running down of the US economy, weak manufacturing, personal debts that outweighed assets etc and Obama took over at the height of GFC. OK, what was he supposed to do? Refuse any bail-outs.

Whoever got the US presidency in 2008 was always going to be a sitting duck turned into a lame duck then a dead duck.

Thankfully under the Obama admin the USA has more friends and one can only imagine how much worse the situation could have been.

Yeah its all his fault hey?

Its simple, if you continue with the same policies, you ratify them.

Why does the US support so many african leaders?

Cause they're black, and not supporting them is racist. Accusing black governments of failure is racist. Accusing the AU of failure is racist. The AU says so all the time. It is the double standard that has been created by the leftists. They would need to re-programme their populations towards the truth before they can even start making accusations, nevermind pushing for action.

Well said. Leftist race lunacy has hit new heights with this administration.

Been sipping the kool-aid a little too long. No where did Obama promise to end the war in Afghanistan. In fact he supported it and escalated it but don't lets facts get in the way.

I expect a rebuttal along the lines of "he wants to end the war but is faced by the all powerful military industrial complex for which the great man courageously opposes in a battle he can't hope to win "

Lol, no he's bought and paid for like the rest of them.

In an ideal world he should have pulled out by now but he is an american president, you don't pull out of wars unless you are forced.

There’s also the fact that America has a reputation for starting crap and then finding excuses to leave letting others clean-up their mess. Obama tried to kill that reputation by cleaning their mess (read extending the war). It looks as if it might backfire as they have started with the ‘pulling-out’ excuses. Others will be left holding the baby.

“Long live Amurica, our grate nation.”

How much of that aid gets taken by corrupt government officials and how much actually helps the people of africa? If the US really wanted to help africa they would remove the shocking leaders in power and they would not be giving them billions.
Um, yes, how much of it actually helps the people of africa? Since I work full time in foreign aid, I have a clue. How about you Killa? Some of it goes missing, but there are more checks and balances than you think.

Bailing africa out, do you mean giving billions to corrupt governments so they can destroy africa? Africa would be better off without hand outs, all the hand outs do is enrich the governments in africa. Read this article http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=17095866

Snippet: Skeptics complain that much of the money given to help Africans has been stolen by corrupt African leaders. They say that stolen aid money helps keep such leaders in power, and that aid that does get to the people undermines their ability to fend for themselves.

Surely america should be thinking about america and not africa though? it must suck having your president bailing out all these corrupt governments in africa while destroying their own country financially.

Why does the US support so many african leaders? They don't deserve the support yet billions are given each year to these corrupt country destroyers. Go in take them out like they did in liyba, naaa i suppose pretending to give shyte by throwing at the problem is the best way. Sadly not for the people of africa. We need to have an african spring and cutting africa off may just bring it on or the leaders will realize they need to make money now, no more hand outs. Get the country going or else you starve, at the moment their people starve while they live in mansions and live like kings, why are they rewarded for destroying countries?

Might as well make KillaDoob president. You have my vote.

Treatment and care for millions

According to the statement, the Pepfar framework will build on existing US support for South Africa's efforts to provide HIV prevention, treatment and care for millions of people in the country.

In 2010 alone, Pepfar funds have supported treatment for nearly 920 000 adults and children in South Africa, while more than five-million South Africans have been tested for HIV and received HIV counselling with US support.

Nkoana-Mashabane was in the US this week as part of South Africa's efforts to improve trade relations between the two countries.

According to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, total official development assistance from the US amounted to approximately $681.9-million in 2009.

Why are they giving us money? That is what our government is for, they are just making our government a bunch of beggars.

That is my point shibal, when will africa learn to stand on it's own feet? Hey at least when we turn in zim 2.0 we can count on the US to give our government some congratulatory money. Well done Malema, here is a couple billion for you are your partners to enjoy for running the country so well.

The math will never work, simple as that. Africa has not the means to make ends meet. I don't disagree that there are important lessons in sustainability but you really think Africa has the means, drugs etc. to treat it's people? $200 per person gets ARV treatment in Africa. Thats a 10th of what Americans get on their public health system. It's not alot of money.

Our government cant spend it's own budget properly - KZN health department returning a billion bucks case in point. Who suffers? If you want to leave a country to it's devices, just look north. Be thankful the US and Europe takes an interest in South Africa for whatever reason... just be thankful.

So you reckon it is good to hand out money to corrupt governments because they cannot manage their funds? So tell me moving forward how will that change anything? You don't think by handing out money that it could catch on?

Almost like a beggar who tells his mates he makes more money at a robot than he would doing someone's lawn, the net is result is people begging. So if you ask me the more you hand out the more beggars you will find at your door. Why figure out how to change your country when you are living a lavish life purely because you cannot run a country . The US and everyone else that contributes to these corrupt people are making it worse not better. Whether is it the US handing out billions or SA giving swaziland billions. I stand to be corrected on the swaziland part of my post, i think it was swaziland could be wrong.

You know i find it amazing that the so called people who love the US were in an uproar when we gave swaziland a bail out, the US states does it and they are heroes. You don't give money to people who are destroying countries, surely it's a very simple rule that should be followed and i have no idea why people who destroy countries get to live so well while their people starve. Very heroic giving the leaders so much money while you watch them destroy africa. i can understand greece, italy, spain but when you look at africa you just see bad leadership backed up billions of AID. The sad thing is by giving these leaders money you are solving nothing.

The AIDS epidemic is very bad and it is very good to see how the world does care about it but handing out money is not the way to fix the AIDS epidemic, all it does it prolong your life but it is not stopping the thousands daily infected and the thousands dying daily does it? So africa will only ever be known as the AIDS continent that needs money. It can never become anything else because we are throwing money at a problem and that does not solve the problem. Sure the presidents live like royality so i guess in that regard keep giving them money, africa is such a shyte hole anyway it's not like presidents who did good for the countries would be better than the corrupt beggars in power now.

You have to wonder how the NHI (which is basically just going to throw money at the problem) will help our sinking public health system when they can't properly spend what they have now.

Senate Attempt To Block Debt Ceiling Increase Fails: Debt Target Is Now $15.2 Trillion, Or Over 100% Of GDP
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/senat...-debt-target-now-152-trillion-or-over-100-gdp
Earlier today we observed that absent immediate action by the House and Senate to enact the critical $500 billion debt ceiling expansion, the US would run out of Keynesian dry powder as soon as Monday. There is no longer a need to worry. According to the Hill, an attempt to sabotage the bankruptcy of America has failed after a Senate resolution to disapprove the $500 billion debt ceiling increase proposed by Mitch McConnell was voted down 45 to 52. As a reminder, "Under the debt-ceiling agreement reached in early August, the Obama administration was authorized to immediately raise the debt ceiling by $400 billion. Another $500 billion increase was authorized this month, although that could have been blocked if both the House and Senate approved resolutions expressing disapproval." The opportunity cost of passing the bill would have been an additional 10 hours of work tomorrow for the Senatorial millionaires for whom insider trading is legal: "Earlier in the day Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) threatened to hold the Senate open for up to ten hours on Friday to "dispose" of the resolution if it moved forward." As a result of this vote, a parallel bill in Congress is now moot even though it has not been voted on. This effectively greenlights the increase of the US debt ceiling from the current $14.694 to $15.194 trillion, or roughly 101% of GDP.

Some more:

On Thursday morning McConnell suggested senators could use the vote as a way to respond to President Obama's "jobs" speech to a joint session of Congress in which he presented a proposal that he said would stimulate the American economy.

"After the president's speech tonight calling for more stimulus spending, the Senate will vote on his request for an additional $500 billion increase in the debt ceiling," McConnell said. "So senators will have an opportunity to vote for or against this type of approach right away."

A House Republican resolution has also been introduced, H.J.Res. 77, that has the potential to pass if most Republicans decide to support it. Still, House passage would not be enough to stop the $500 billion increase in the debt ceiling since the Senate stopped it.

The House resolution, from Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY), has 49 cosponsors, all Republicans.

The House and Senate resolutions are identical, and read:

"Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That Congress disapproves of the President's exercise of authority to increase the debt limit, as exercised pursuant to the certification under section 3101A(a) of title 31, United States Code."

The Senate adjourned at 8.31 p.m. and is set to return on Friday at 9:45 a.m.

Congratulations America: you just bought yourself 3 more months.

I have to agree. SaladCharger make a valid point, but aid just leads to further breeding, exacerbating the problem (it gets worse). The horns of a dilemma.

I'm a bit lost as to the article Geriatrix posted, not really knowing the american political system.

In blunt terms, has their ceiling beeen increased again or not? Surely someone needs to wake up that they can't just keep on increasing the ceiling, something needs to actually be done.

Yes it has or it will be, in 3 months when they hit the new ceiling it will go up and so on...

Must be wonderful having endless supplies of money and you get to decide how much you need :D.
