Hi guys,

I've just ordered my new and first laptop from the US. I'm getting a Sony Vaio F/W 520 with Ati hd 4650 graphics chip. Anyway, if I'm not mistaking the power supply/cord which comes with the laptop will be for the US and will not work on our power outlets. What are my options here? Do I need to get a new power supply/cord or should a universal plug converter do the trick?

Get a cord locally and keep the US one for if you travel. Off the top of my head I can think of two types that are prominent and they're both easy to find. You may even have one already.

Most notebook power supplies (the "brick") are switching, so will work on both 240V or 120V. You can check this on the power supply label; it should say what the input voltage is. Then all you need is a plug so that the power supply cable fits the outlets here. Alternatively, you can also just buy the cable (eliminates the need for adapters).

Oh okay, so if I understand correctly it is basically a 2 piece setup to get power to the laptop. a cord that comes from the wall socket, into the "brick" which then leads to the laptop. and the brick will take care of switching the voltages. So then i can just get a cord which fits here.

yeh, your brick will be dual - just pop into hifi corp or somewhere and get the connecting cable - it costs about R20

you can buy an adaptor for plugs here and in any other country from Diskem.

Well if you not planning on using the US plug I would just buy a SA plug, cut the US one off and rewire it to the new plug... cost is less than a new cord but then again at R20, it really comes down to preference.

My PSP i got in UK, i just cut the end off, attached SA plug and was done with it.
