While every hotel has Wifi, most of them don't necessarily for free. Stayed at the Hilton in September and WiFi access was around USD 20 for a day-pass. All Starbucks have free WiFi and OP could have used those for Skype - puzzles me...
 
The city in which you are currently staying is HOUSTON. Not Huston. You keep spelling it wrongly.

And frankly what kind of character does it display if you pay thousands of rands to holiday somewhere and you can't even check the ticket stub to see where it is you're actually staying?

He's not. I go to the US a couple a times a year. My trips are evenly split between going for work, visiting family and friends, and travelling. I've stayed in everything from the cheapest s***hole I could find to real expensive ones paid for by my employer or client. Including, as it happens, a Marriot in Texas (not Houston though).

The internet was around $15 per day (this is how much I pay for an uncapped 24mbit/s line at home) and the terms of use expressly forbid using it for skype or other VOIP services. That's probably why it's slow - they're doing their damnest to shape it out. SSH was pretty terrible too.

I have only ever encountered free, unencumbered wifi at youth hostels. Some of the cheap hotels (Days Inn, for example) have free or cheap internet (I don't remember which), but it's usually not the fastest. At least, I remember being able to make Skype-out calls from a Days Inn. Expensive hotels always rip you off on internet.

Don't use the hotel phone for anything other than calling the front desk. That's the same everywhere. This is not just in the US, it's the same everywhere.
