My 3G connection is working very well, but I'm appalled at how quickly the MB are racking up. Can I really have transferred 400MB of data in 2 days? If I download a file of, say, 60MB, is that measured as 60MB or does it work out as more?

Also, I am now unable to access the vodacom4me page - I see that this was a problem previously - has anyone resolved it?

Many thanks
Slak

Hi Slak & welcome to MyADSL :).

Have you got a firewall & anti-malware installed on your system [assuming Windoze]?

First eliminate malware [adware & spyware] as a possible cause then we can discuss this further :).

Hi Slak

Don't have 3G, but I can access the vodacom4me site using GPRS. I sometimes have to try more than once, before it will open up properly, though... ;)

Thanks everyone, will try de-malware-ing and report back.

Is anyone else have trouble sending out mail today? "I'm getting the error 452..4.4.5 Insufficient disk space"

Just btw, after i couldn't log into vodacom4me, i found that i can also find my usage at vodacomsp [the new site and assuming you are using Vodacom as your SP]. Still HELLISHLY slow, but at least i get in, and it -might- even be lighter on bandwidth since there's no adds and all kinds of news snippets and stuff all around the page. Besides you can actually do more on vodacomsp with your account etc. [Just the fact that the login page itself is JUST the login and not an entire collage of Vodacom ads helps alot already]

Linky : https://www.vodacomsp.co.za/wps/portal/!ut/p
It's under "My Account -> Account Info -> View Bundles"

*sigh* VodacomSP should REALLY put some effort into making VodaSurf cross-browser compatible.

I have a Mac, and have tried: Safari / FireFox / IE 5.1 to enable me to login to the site. When I click any submit button, it does NOTHING.

So I take it VodaSurf is only IE 6 compatible. What a shame.

Actually i just tried it on Firefox 1.0.2 and i logged in fine [it's even faster than IE!]. My guess is some security setting. The page uses JAVA extensively, so check into that, might even be a popup blocker.

See previous threads in this regard

V3G, any news yet from the development team w.r.t a quicker simpler interface? May I suggest something like www.vodacom4me.co.za/082xxxxxxx to get your usage. But please, no passwords, no details, no java, no graphics, no vb scripts, just bottom line for the month to date usage. It will then even be multiple browser compatible. :p

Confidentiality should not be a problem. If it still is, let someone subscribe to get access to such a service. It currently takes x^n (x to the power of n for the non engineering people) clicks on either vodasurf or vodacom4me sites to get to the required detail.

Slak, in the mean time I would suggest using an accurate usage monitor like DU Traffic. It proved very accurate over the last month, but is still no proof that you are safe w.r.t. Vodacom's perspective.

Righty-ho - firewalls, spybots, ad-thingummies all in place. Why does the meter keep running when I've supposedly blocked all activity?

Slak, this is possibly a stupid question, but any chance you have apps that are set to auto-update behind the scenes - windows for example?

Need clarification...

Ok, is this the Dashboard meter? or the online data usage stats?

PS: When you ran the scans to detect & remove malware, was anything found & removed? What OS are you running? - if Windoze, [post=210451]make sure you have disabled automatic updates[/post]...:)

Well, I thought I'd set everything to *not* auto-update, but I could be wrong. I usually get a little balloon telling that updates are ready - would that cover all the software?

If you're being prompted by a pop-up balloon first, it would normally indicate that Windows (that is the operating system you're using?) will wait for your "okay" before doing any updates. Other programs, like anti-virus products, are also frequently set up to check for updates, although these updates would be smaller in size...

Was any malware detected / removed, as per ic's question a couple of posts earlier?

The Dashboard meter seems to chug along merrily showing constant uploading, even when no applications are open (albeit more slowly than previously ...)

Yes, malware by the bucketful was apparently detected and quarantined. Yikes.

Ok, well it sounds like there is still some malware on your PC that hasn't been detected & removed - this is why you need at least 2 anti-malware apps installed - they don't detect everything & each one detects different things.

My next question is what firewall software do you have installed? Does it have an "internet lock" that you can engage? Does it have logs & alerts that you can look through?

I suggest you get a a good firewall like ZoneAlarm which shows which apps are using the internet. There a few ones like Agnitum and Sygate which is more advanced showing nicely every port and which app is using it. That way you can actually block an app directly from there.

Also a quick shortcut is to go into command prompt and type "netstat", it will also show all active connection [but not which app is using it].

I was going to suggest NetLimiter v1.3 as a last resort, note suggest - not recommend - I had a problem with it on my PC, so last resort only...

Basically NetLimiter shows which processes are consuming bandwidth in Windoze, and allows you to shape their available bandwidth, as well as record usage stats...

Use with caution...

What forumites say about NetLimiter: +site:mybroadband.co.za +netlimiter
