Hi.

I just got the following usb hub:
http://www.orico.cc/goods.php?id=6277

It unfortunately didn't come with a power adapter, although it did come with a usb power cable which can plug into a usb power adapter. Any idea what the specs are for a compatible power adapter?

I have tried google but so far my searches have been in vain.

Thanks in advance.

Check again, as hub from the link has a round DC power jack for supplying power (the last photo).

The cable supplied is for uplink connection (to your PC), I am pretty sure.

It came with the two cables as shown below:

The first pic connects the hub to pc.
Second one is the power supply cable that can plug into a power adapter (similar to a cell phone).

Don't want to use just any power adapter in case I damage the hub.

Yes, Dianysis you are right. The cable with a round plug is for powering the hub. You can either use this cable for USB power supply designed for cellphones or find an AC adapter with compatible round plug. I both cases it must be 5VDC with at least 5 Ampers maximum load to be able to handle 10 ports 500mA each. Smaller adapter will also work if you limit number of ports. Also remember that devices are not equal: keyboard, mouse require almost nothing, but hard drives will overload ports during powering up.

Obviously, it depends on what you are planning to connect to the hub, as to what sort of power supply you require. The one certain requirement is that it is 5V. So, you could plug the power cable into a regular cell-phone charger, and it would work fine for a few flash drives, or other self-powered devices like printers, etc.

However, if you want to plug a bunch of 2.5" hard drives, and run them all at the same time, you will need to find a beefier powersupply, something that can provide up to (as per sajunky) 5A at 5V. These are unfortunately not too common in a USB phone charger format, which typically go up to 2.4A max.

You may need to find an alternate supply that has the same barrel connector as on the cable provided to get full use from your hub.

Here are a few different types depending on how many devices you are planning to power. These are much better quality industrial power adapters (Mean Well) than the cheap Chinese devices that you can find on Aliexpress etc.
