USB HUBS ?

My latest laptop only has two USB ports and I need to expand.

For use at the home office, I would like to get a powered USB hub and a non-powered for when I travel.

I have used various ones before, Canyon was a brand I remember, not the others.

None really worked well and I need something enduring and built to last.

Recommendations based upon experience?

What do you mean by saying "None really worked well"?
Trying to pickup what your requirements are.

I bought one of these 4-port hubs recently at China Mall in Crown Mines (~R50). I find the individual port switches very useful. There is also a 7-port version and they both come in black and white. They have many other types if you browse around the different shops. I haven't tried connecting it to a separate power supply.

Thanks, everyone. Apologies for getting back so late but I was without "cloud cover" for a while.

Previous experiences with USB hubs, powered and non-powered, is that their ports would start malfunctioning randomly until they finally stop working altogether. Regardless of the price variances, all seemed to be of questionable quality. Directly from store shelves locally, almost all dealers stock Canyon mostly and then some "exotic brands" nobody ever heard of. Prices range between around R150 - R350 and they all fail within warranty period……I just became tired of returning to the shops as it costs more in time & travel to get it replaced than it is actually worth. I just sold my Dell which had 4 ports as I am now using a Macbook Pro that only has two.

Be careful if buying a real cheapie, as I just discovered to my cost. I picked up a very common one for about R35 from a branch of The Crazy Store (the cheap and cheerful Chinese-goods retailer found in many malls). Bad move -- it works just fine with a USB keyboard and mouse, but it can't even handle a standard flash drive, let alone an external 2.5" hard-drive which my laptop's USB ports happily supports. So it's destined for landfill, alas....

I have a powered Targus 8-port hub and an unpowered Belkin 4-port one. Both work for at least 3 years without problem.
