Hi everyone

I'm looking for a bit of help/advice. I am trying to get my E220 to work through Sun Microsystems Virtual Sandbox without having to resort to ICS from the host OS. VS supports USB devices unlike MS VP 2007. However while the host OS "sees" the modem, there is no pass through to the guest OS (in this case the guest is XP). I have set up filters and still no joy.

Why do I want to do this? Well in my line of work I train people on how to set up the E220 etc (for Vodacom's network only) on Windows PCs. Instead of carrying two laptops (1 with Vista and 1 with XP) or dualbooting, I thought that virtual environments were the way to go. Maybe I'm wrong. Help!

Thanks :)

hmmm

ok get vmware server ( the free one ) form their website, and run your apps in there. VMware allows passthrough of use devices to the gues OS. The host OS wont have access to the device though.....

Thanks for the tip, but I already looked at this and you can only install vmware server on a Windows server OS, not on a normal Vista laptop.

You can install VMWare server on any windows OS and I have tested the USB modem, and it works on VMWorkstation.

Try VirtualBox rather; its better than VMServer....

You can use VP to access your USB modem. Just set the network settings for the VM to use the adapter that your modem uses, not NAT.

Hi all

Thanks for the all the help and tips.

Just an update from my side. Got the free new Vmware server v2.0 (580MB - ouch) and installed it, but setting up an new virtual machine through the new web based interface was ott for me. SO I went back to VirtualBox. Played around with the config and got the guest OS to see the USB modem - yayyyyy! However, when I actually try connect I now get RAS error 692 - hardware failure in port or actual device. Still working on that one, but any tips here will help.

Will also try the tip from Smooth Criminal in VP. I need to make this as simple as possible so that our other less technical trainers can use it. :)

VMware Workstation is the way to go. Period. Virtual Box is ok but workstation trumps it!
