For those of you who like to download goodies off news servers here's a very nice usenet search site I've found:

http://www.usenetspider.com/

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about here's an excellent guide to using newsgroups:
http://slyck.com/ng.php

After discovering the delights of IS's news server (news.is.co.za) I won't be going back to torrents... I can download locally at 70K/s+ and there's no ratio bs etc. Marvelous. :D

Welcome to the newsgroups - and thanks for that search site - will make use of it.

Thnx for the info, will give it a try aswell.

Is there any free newsgroups out there. I am trying to access newsgroups from work
but fails to connect whatever I try.
ps .. still waiting for telskum to install my adsl

Speaking of news servers, what is the address for the WebAfrica news server?

news.saix.net is the news server to use for any SAIX based accounts.

Keep in mind, the retention on the saix server sucks.

ps. seems there is a news.webafrica.co.za , try it out.

interesting that I get an authentication error on the saix server with my WA account info. And the WA news server doesn't even try to authenticate

weird, u shouldnt select authentication on the saix server tho? Or do u disable authentication and then get authentication failed?

I tried this thing last night. You get a lot of errors when downloading, especially audio files.

Erm, just for interest sake, that usenet search engine is crap. :D

Try www.newzbin.com . They also have a nifty little thing called NZB. Read up about it. Might be worth your while...

Verrry nice - Thanks for the link. ;)

I use Easynew's search engine but occasionally revert to using newsbin if I'm having trouble finding something. Newsbin is also tied in nicely with vcdquality.com.

What's better about Newsgroups say VS Torrents (Local), just out of interest's sake. Can you download all the content from LOCAL newsgroups or does some content have to be downloaded from overseas networks? (I am on IS)

I've heard some ppl say newsgroups are better just wondering why?

Thanks!

Newsgroups are better because you're downloading locally directly from your provider's news server so you get very high speeds (I peak at about 72K/s from the IS news server). Also you don't have to constantly upload as you do with torrents so you save bandwidth.

The only difficulty can be in finding stuff on the newsgroups but that's where services like nzbzone.com (free) or newzbin.com can help.

You are encouraged not to upload. Therefore all your cap is expended by downloading.

IS apparently has a great free local news server but if you opt for a pay service the charges are very reasonable.

As far as actual content goes - chances are the majority of what you download from a torrent site originated from a newsgroup.

Thanks for the info!

Ps.(bwana v.7 I think they originated from Scene FTP's first ;) )
