Thanks for the info!

Ps.(bwana v.7 I think they originated from Scene FTP's first ;) )
Yeah - most likely but the point I should have been trying to make is that downloads - accessable to the general public - are generally available on usenet even before they get distributed via torrent. :)

newsgroups are really messy, esp if u dont have a good newsserver, all u IS guys should consider urselves lucky... saix retention is terrible.

As is UUNET - had to go the paying route but it does have its advantages - dead easy to use and downloading files in zip format over http means being able to use a download manager like DA or reget. Considered switching to IS just for the newsgroups but it worked out cheaper to stay where I was.

Well, thanks to Bwana and Lukev, in addition to my other two overseas news accounts, I tried Easynews. NNTP over Uunet, even on "other" ports was getting very slow on weekdays. But Uunet must give top priority to HTTP, because now with Easynews, their Zip manager, and Reget, I seem to be maxing out my connection something silly! Leech leech leech leech!!! :)

The Easynews completeness is not quite up to Giganews, but I can always fill in there if needed.

Thanks guys!
:)

I think its the only thing they give priority to but it works for me. :) Dont forget to do the survey and that World Community Grid - last night they were giving away another free gig for answering a poll. Nice.

EDIT -

Have you tried the secure nntp settings? My nntp easynews is pretty decent.

No haven't done that. I'll try it sometime, but am enjoying getting pre-decoded messages at maximum speed so will stick with that till I have soaked up enough "stuff" to want to try nntp again. :) Have to buy more drive space soon!!

You mentioned an nntp proxy in another thread - what is that? Please tell ;)

Thanks again Bwana.

Thanks again Bwana.
The nntp proxy is just one of the alternatives they offer on different ports in case your isp shapes or blocks access the the standard one.
proxy.news.easynews.com listens on ports 22, 23, 53, 80, 110 and 443 to allow you to bypass firewalls or rate limits on port 119.

I've noticed that some files listed as missing can be found using nntp and while they might not be 100% (which is why they're listed that way in the http service) but they can help if you dont have enough par2 files.

I used to use the Mweb news server, I think it is mweb.news.co.za.

I could see A LOT of news groups and posts when I still had a dial-up account with Mweb, then I upgraded to a ADSL account. Still with Mweb. Now I can only see the same days posts and see much less groups. I asked a Mweb techie and the person said that they need to investigate, but was unable to give me a valid reason. Now I have to subscribe to an overseas News server to get the same kind of service as I used to get with Dial-up. Mweb is using the SAIX news server.

Can someone here please explain that to me ?
Has anybody else had the same experience with SAIX or Mweb news servers ?

for Mweb dialup users news.mweb.co.za=news.is.co.za
for Mweb ADSL users, news.mweb.co.za=news.saix.co.za

Thanks,

I thought that mite be the case, but why would that be. Could they not have allowed us to download from the IS news server at slower speeds ?

That would also do, A lot cheaper than having to pay $8 for a similar service over seas which we can not fully use unless because you are cappedbefore you can use up your allowed downloads.
