User feedback: Important

From former ADSL user !!!!

Not happy about

. When I last had my ADSL line my International bandwidth seemed to be fine , just as good as my local when uncapped.
. 3 gig cap not nearly enough for even average user!
. Port Prioritization, I play on-line overseas aswell!!
. Cost could be lower but as with everything new you always pay a premium
. Telkom MODEMS way over priced !!!!
. Role out of areas without ADSL, THIS NEEDS TO BE SPEEDED UP!!!!
. Telkoms efforts to inform the public on what exactly is going on with ADSL in this Country

Happy about

. ADSL when its working like it should
. Telkom ADSL installers fast efficient friendly
. The effort to bring broadband to the masses

Thank you

Good:
* Local speeds. It's great!

Bad:
* 3 Gig cap

Ugly:
* Lack of support (and a heck of a lot of ignorance)
* Suffering for the rest of the month because of hitting the 3 gig cap
* Lack of open ports
* International bandwidth is lackluster atm
* Lack of interest on Telkom's behalf

I could go on for forever!

3 world country.. yeah, thats us!

They are excluding Internet Gaming as part of their ADSL experience. Was this intentional? Or do they just not know how to do it?

Why did I have this when it was sold to me, and why has it been taken away. If what Steven White says it's true that their roll out went smoothly, why have we LOST functionality that was there when it was installed initially?

I'll tell you why - because of their 'carefull balancing' of the network. And things did not go as smoothly as he says, otherwise they would not have had to institute these measures[xx(]

Hi guys

Thanks for the excellent response.

I am including all of these in my correspondence with the media. I will also try to raise all these issues in interviews. Please keep them coming.

>We should at least get the equivalent of an isdn connection after the cap. Most of the adsl users upgraded or should i say downgraded from isdn.
>In addition, why should it matter what we are doing with our bandwidth we are paying a premium for this service that isn't delivering.

Does anybody know how much international bandwidth is dedicated to all the dsl users and how many dsl users there are? ...I am curious to know how much telkom is overselling the bandwidth.

Main problem would be the faulty modems that remain faulty when patched. The qualty of the ethernet modems is just shocking, worse than the adsl service itseld.

Second to this would be the changing of the cap strategy to include both upl + dl. Just pathetic.

1. Call Center is imposible to get hold off.
2. Staff at call cebter are anything but helpful.
3. Staff at call center know little or nothing about the product they are employed to support.
4. Int bandwidth is huge problem, even before reaching cap limit, did anyone try to visit the MS site 2 weeks ago, you could not even ping it.

Real major problem int bandwidth!!!

Hi Cwayjone

The last unofficial figure I heard was 25 Megs for 10,000 users. This has not been verified, but it comes from a reliable Telkom source.

Not sure if this calculation is correct....

25 megabytes = 25mb *1024 = 25600kilobytes

25600kb/512kb = 50 (number of 512kb links possible)

10000users / 50= 200 times

Telkom is overselling the bandwidth 200 times i.e. every 512kb of overseas bandwidth is sold to 200 customers. How can they promise 512kb?

What does telkom do with all the bandwidth for the rest of the month? Or is it sold to other customers as well. I would think that the peak use is at the beginning of the month and as everybody exceeds the cap more spare/unused bandwidth becomes available ...why can't it be shared amongst the capped users?

Is Telkom going to start telling us who we can phone and who we cant

Nooo, it doesn't quite work like that. My ISP has about 200,000 users, and at 3 Mbps per user I promise you they don't have 600,000 Mbps. There is something called a contention ratio I think... Something like 20:1 or so, because not everyone will be using the internet at the same time at full capacity. It is a big nasty statistics problem really.

Please note that bandwidth is usually quoted in kiloBITS per second.

The calculation still holds be it bits or bytes.

I'm not sure what the industry norms are, so I'll keep my mouth shut on this.

Bad :

3 Gig Cap,
Port prioritization
Modem Cost ( There are cheaper & better options out there )

Acceptable :

Cost : IF the above issues are sorted out !

I am concerned by the utter lack of transparency. We are being sold a pig in a poke, and have no real idea of what it is that we are buying, beyond the fact that nothing is guaranteed.

Telkom's vague answers to questions regarding how bandwidth is controlled is unacceptable.

In order to know what we are getting for our money, we need a detailed, current, on-line diagram of the telkom network architecture as it applies to ADSL users

There are standard queue disciplines, etc used for such control and, I am certain, many savvy users who are quite able to understand and explain the consequences to the non-techs amongst us.

More calculations:

Based on isdn.

6kb * 60secs = 360kb per min

360kb * 60mins = 21.60megs per hour

21.6 * 60hours = 1296megs per weekend (Fri evening – mon morning)

21.6 * 12hours * 4days = 1036.8megs for all week nights (mon -thurs)

2.33gb per week only nights

4 week month = 9.32 gb per month

Then using Telkom’s logic we double the above figure (Upload and download) = 18.64gb per month (nights only)

On the R7 package:
5 (4 weekday evenings and 1 weekend call)* R7 = R35 (obviously Telkom will disconnect a couple of hundred times)

But in the perfect scenario it would cost R140 a month (call charges only, excl. monthly and isp charges) and we would be able to have 18gb limit.

Isn’t adsl supposed to be a better service than isdn?

Shouldn’t we therefore get a 20gb cap a month? We pay a lot more than isdn.
