I have been having huge problems connecting to the net with my 4 meg home dsl line. Sites load halfway then just hang , my download speeds are so poor that I cant even do a Telkom speed test. I contacted Telkom and they suggest I use a proxy on my router and change my DNS to addresses they gave me. I have no clue how to do this-can someone please help me? I am using the old Marconi 4 port router. Thanks in advance.

Proxy/DNS configuration

For Proxy : you open internet explorer....go to tools....>internet options....>connections....> go down & click on Lan Settings....>enable "use proxy for your LAN" ....> where it says address, you type in : dsl_cache.saix.net and the port number is : 8080
This is for Saix resellers

RESTART THE PC !

For DNS's (assuming you on XP) You go to Control panell....>then you look for Network Connections and open it. (if you cant see it click on switch to classic view on ur left hand side). If you connecting with a Cable ....>right click on Lacal Area Connection (Wireless Network connection for wireless connection) and select Properties, look for Internet Protocol TCP/IP and Double Click on it.

Go down and Enable "use DNS servers for your LAN"
you can use 196.25.255.34 and 196.25.255.3 for Saix reseller or use appropiate DNS's for you ISP or Region.

You can also go to your Router/Modem LAN Settings and manually assign your DNS settings;)

Thanks Tumi007, I will try those settings as soon as I get home. One more question if I may,the instructions you provide are for IE, can I assume the same or similar settings apply to Opera ,my browser of choice?

Ive had similar problems with international sites, I doubt the proxy thing will help that much. Atleast if it does then I know for sure Telkoms network sucks.

Local is fine.. how is your local browsing and downloads?

Local sites seem to be ok.I am am having a problem with Telkoms speed test however-starts off fine for 10 seconds and then-nothing!
Tried the proxy and dns settings but no joy.I'll give Telkom another call-any suggestions?

Doesn't seem to work like that Azriel, with IS it seems you are confined to the proxy utilized by your assigned IP.You cannot deliberately enter a new general public IS cache from my continued limited experimentation, there are a bunch in the 168 range that I have been funnelled through before. So it seems there are more extensive Access Control Lists and topology wize I know for sure that they SAIX proxies are transparent and utilize Netcache Netapp inline transparent proxy servers, whereas I have yet to establish whether or not the IS ones are transparent. RIght now, I would say they probably aren't because of the latency involved with transparent proxies, which they surely could not afford while utilizing satelite.

Not to mention I don't know all the IS proxies so my results are limited, unless they specifically say to you that there are other proxies for you to use when the network is slow in your vicinity.
