Using Pyrex glassware directly on electric stovetop?

I know you shouldn't, but is it really that big of a problem?

I spent about three hours jumping between Reddit and Quora debates only to find two conclusions; Never use Pyrex directly on the stovetop, it will explode! And, it should be fine if there are no drastic temperature changes...

So back to square one, and now I am here. Some of the things mentioned were the composition of the glass, where it was made, and what year it was made (apparently the old-school Pyrex stuff is the best).

I love my Pyrex glassware and have used and abused it through the years without any issues *touch wood*.

I have a Pyrex Classic 3L bowl I got about 20 years ago, it still has part of the sticker left which lists "Extreme Resistance, Verre Glass, Borosilicate, +300 C" and I want to heat the contents to a maximum of 120 degrees for half an hour and then drop the temperature to about 85 degrees for three hours. I have a digital thermometer I will use to monitor the temperature so it's just a case of me turning the stovetop on and off to keep temperatures in range. I don't think there will be any issues, especially as the label lists this bowl as borosilicate and I will only be heating it to 120 degrees...

So, what do the *experts* think? Am I going to end up with a kitchen full of glass?
 
I think if it is round and the same size as the stoveplate it might work as the heat will be the same throughout the bottom but if the contents are quite cold it could cause it to shatter as there would be quite a temperature difference between the bottom and top part. Personally I wouldn't risk it. My 2c worth.

That is the correct way to use it. But he says he needs to cycle the temperature. Which will cause some external stressors on the glass, I think. Not worth risking one of the few good products out there.

Cycling implies up and down. He wants to cook at 120 then drop it down to a lower temp for three hours. An oven is going to do a far better job at maintaining a constant temp.
 
Ok cool, that concludes it then! I definitely don't want a kitchen full of glass and coconut oil today. I think I will order a 3L beaker for this purpose as I have used smaller beakers and lab flasks on the stove without any issues. I am making a base of coconut oil + cannabis to be used in edibles and topicals so the contents need to be stirred every few minutes. I have used a regular stainless steel pot in the past, but glass is just so much cleaner and easier to clean.

Its better to use a double boiler. So put your glassware inside your stainless pot full of water.
 
I have seen many glass and pottery cups etc explode on the stove.
I am no scientist but I think what happens is the bottom glass on the stove gets hot fast and the top and side of the glass is still cool and then when the cool and hot meet it cracks/explode. An oven heats up the glass evenly from all sided.

I'm just being lazy :laugh:, I would usually do that, but I was hoping I could skip the decarboxylation process in the oven which requires temperatures to reach 116-120 degrees before using a double boiler.
