Hello there, MyBB brains!

Pls help with a few questions to a SSD noob! I got the OCZ Vertex 120gb and want to install Windows on it. I found this guide, is it any good? http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdd

I will update f/w to 2.15.

What else should I know?

What should I install on it, Windows, a few games, and most used programs?

Can I set Windows to make "My Docs" on another drive so pics and music ect doesnt automatically go onto C drive?

Thanks :D

Yes, good guide.
I would suggest you plan what you want on the SSD, obviously based on the amount of data you have and what you use most on the PC.

I suggest all programs, working folders, scratch disks, etc go on the SSD, and the data on the HDD.

With only 120GB at your disposal I suggest you remaster your win7 install media to take out all the crap you don't need in order to save some gigs.

When reinstalling, leave only the SSD connected and install. Connect the other drives after Windows is installed.

Lol, I still don't understand how people need a larger windows drive, my windows fits healthily on a 80GB partition with about 20 GB free!

Don't forget to change the location of your desktop to your documents hard drive also, I made the mistake of not doing this.

Also jumped aboard and got the 120GB Vertex. Mind explaining how this is done though? Would love to keep desktop/My Docs on a spinner.

The sad thing is I can't remember, but I Googled this and it seems to work:

Setting my Desktop location with Windows 7

To change your default desktop location and do the following:

1. Open the Registry editor (Regedit.exe)
2. Browse to the location:
HKCU > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer > User Shell Folders.
3. In the right window pane select the required value (i.e. Desktop).
4. Insert the new location for the folder to be stored.
5. Close the registry editor and log off.

When you log back on your Windows 7 folder location such as the desktop will be stored at the new location. You do need to note that any content that was stored in the old location does not move with the change and will need to be moved from the old location to the new location before you will see it again.

Here's some images to show that it works:

Thanks, what are others' thoughts on this?

IMO people are going overboard trying to save a few writes on their SSDs. Even with some 'abuse' it should still last a good couple of years. Mine has three years warranty anyway and if it breaks after that the prices should have come down enough to get a bigger drive for a reasonable cost.

All I did for my SSDs were:
1) checked AHCI was enabled
2) disabled defrag
3) disabled prefetch
4) disabled superfetch

Everything else I just left default.
