Hmm... does it look like today was the day they shut down? I just tried it and no anonymous login permitted anymore.

:D Waha. Yeah, well, I guess that defeats the point of keeping things low key. :P I'm sure that's a major factor to it all. Not really the idea of it having carried warez, etc, but just how public it became. Ah, well, there goes a nice transfer point to do stuff on local-only bandwidth.
 
There's a big difference between using it for piracy and making the piracy public. If you go posting links in public, what do you think is going to happen? Really dumb. UUNET has had illegal content on it for years. They never cared. All that changed is the p2p mob rocked up and turned it into a problem. The same thing is going to happen with the news servers. Newshost has turned into a joke. It's impossible to even get a connection any more. Why? "GOGO USE NEWSGROUPS FOR FREE STUFF" on public forums. Now every Tom, Dick and Harry is uploading Where's Wally nzb's. Way to go spoil it.
 
that makes sense and it doesn't .......... what about people who have no idea that it exists? How do they ever find out about it? Or is it cool to keep it 'elitist' ......
 
Heck, uunet has been around since I was in university before the "internet was invented." :D End of a nice transfer and share point.

When will our providers realise people like news hosts and finally beef up the 2 local ones? I'm on giganews just for the reason of there be no point to connect to local ones.

IS newsgroups got mentioned here, everyone jumped on them now look, they may as well not exist.

UUNET Ftp hits public, everyone goes for it and now its gone.

In short
Want to screw something up just post it here and it will be ruined in time by the noobs who cant figure this stuff out themselves and thus dont deserve to use it anyways.
