UUNet [FTP] is closing down...

No-one's being elitest. Exposure is definitely what killed it, but let's face the facts that the alot of people out there jumped onto this thing and murdered it and those "could" be the new okes out there. Anyway, it's pegged off now. All who used it contributed to its death.

it is being elitist though ....... how is anyone ever supposed to not be a noob with these things?

Fair enough if that's your view. Let's reword the lot: abusive noob. There's a difference. :D But let's also face the fact that surely some old timers also had a flippin' frenzy with the thing given that local bandwidth has become "cheap" and "speedy." I know there's many a office box out there that's probably been hitting old uunet for stuff as well as hogging lines at night.

yeah, that's better worded :D and makes more sense ;) Was cool while it lasted but now wtf :o

:D

Beats me. I gotta send a large file out to the states and that was my cheapest option. Load there, and they can pick up easy. And I still have a few things to bring across. nntp local sux big time too (loaded grabit again but just sitting watching something trying to get just 1 connection :P), but I'm gonna see what's up on the local torrents and see how it goes.

Anyway, I'm off to spend R70 on a gig to upload 'cos I can't buy a portion of it.

:) Or tunnel through employer's network connection. :) Did I just say that out loud?

Call me elitist jerk or whatever you what the fact is that the major playing factor in the death of good things is as TheRift said is exposure.

The CAUSE of exposure was the people who thought it was a good idea to "share", now if you have half a brain about good services in this country you do not share them, you keep them amoung a circle of close friends at most.

There is no such thing as a good free thing when it comes to internet based stuff in south africa.
