I take it network connection settings and such would be lost in the flash? What other important settings related stuff would have to be reconfigured?
Also, (sorry, never flashed a phone's FW before), if applications have been installed on the memory card would they still be 'installed' or would that have to be done again?

Applications installed to memory card will need to be re-installed. Obviously, apps installed to phone will all be lost, and will also need to be re-installed.

Hmm, ok thought as much. I suppose I should just look at it like a fresh PC install.. A fresh start :)

I also upgraged to V12 and when downloading the voice guidance it showed 3.5G.

You can turn 3G / HSDPA off under Tools - Settings - Phone - Network - Network Mode - Select GSM.

Backup from PC Suite seemed to work okay after software upgrade!

Satguy can you confirm that you did a full (phone and mem card) backup to PC using the PC Suite, then changed your product code and updated the firmware, then restored your PC suite backup, and your phone was 100%?

What all gets backed up? Just messages and contacts, or settings, apps and media as well?

Flint, I just did a standard backup under PC Suite. This is what the backup log reported:

User files from the Gallery
Bookmarks
Messages
Notes
Contacts

Most of my gallery files are on the memory card, but reflashing does not effect any files located on the memory card, however I would suggest that you remove your memory card before performing a reflashing. I had MXiT installed on my memory card, after the reflashing and restore, MXiT is still there and running, no reinstallation was necessary.

Just to give you some history, I received my N95 with VLive and reflashed it without ever using it. I got it, plugged the USB cable and charger in, ran NSS used EURO1 Plum product code and reflashed to V11. I backed nothing up and restored nothing at the time. Now for the V12 upgrade, I still have the EURO1 product code, ran PC Suite, did the back up (with memory card in), downloaded the latest Updater software and then updated the phone firmware. Checked the phone, all seemed ok, ran PC Suite and did a restore. Phone all ok.

First impressions of the V12 firmware, I have seen the phone display 3.5G on downloading. There appears to be a new app for the GPS where you see your coordinates long, lat, altitude, alt acc, and speed. You also have a trip timer, avg speed, max speed, odo and total time - these functions are standard on most navigators, but missing on the N95 on V11. There may be other new functions and features, but I have not seen them as yet.

hmm, ok, so your backup was already from the changed product code, not from a phone that was still VLive coded. I wonder how much of a difference that would make :/

Yes, I never used my N95 with VLive, judging by reports I saw at the time of my first flashing from V10 - V11, it would appear to be quite risky backing up under one product code and restoring to another product code. I still can't see why this should be, logically it does not make sense - if I purchased a N95 in the UK, say Vodafone, backed up and moved to another part of the world say Europe, had my N95 stolen or damaged, then restored to a newly purchased N95 with a different product code - then brick??!! Seems unlikely that any developer would want that situation occuring.

What about the contacts. Will I be able restore the contacts from the Memory Card or PC Suite?

Piesang - My contacts were fully restored with the PC Suit restore. The only thing that did not get restored was my theme.

However I don't want to be responsible for N95 owners who 'brick' their phones, so the info I give out relates to my experiences with my N95 and can be used a guidline only. My N95 (branded VLive) was never used with VLive firmware as supplied and I followed a debranding excersize that had been applied by users in the UK. I used my own common sense in what and how I performed certain risky procedures, and so far I have been successful in keeping my N95's firmware current. I find it unacceptable that Vodacom VLive N95 owners are still stuck on V10.x while European users are already on V12.x, however having said that, other non VLive and MTN V95 owners are also still sitting on V10.x, so is it just a South Africa thing that we get left behind or is a technical issue that the firmware must be network approved before released?!

I would do it from PC suite, just to be safe.

The GPS data was always there, in 10 and 11, in the tools folder.

For the record, I haven't noticed any major improvements from v11 in v12, except the AGPS.

hehe. okay :) .. wait.. still. The numbers I posted above?

I did mine as I posted above.. was simple. Let me post here what needs to be done with links.

Various Sources: (Highly successful, but still... use at own risk)

1. Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
2. Open Nemesis Service Suite and click “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
3. Click on the icon “Phone info”
4. Click on “Scan”
5. Change the product code to the one you want from the list below.
6. Mark the case “Enable”.
7. Press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed (you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !).
8. Close Nemesis Service Suite and run the Nokia Software Update.
9. Make sure not to touch the cable or the phone while your phone is updating or else you will break it!
10. That’s it! When you restart your phone, it should now be upgraded!

Software:
