Vaal Dam levels

Politics.
A couple of years ago the Vaal was at 110% and we still had a drought.
Guess they want to future proof another one.

Simple. Profit/subsidy.

Many ekurhuleni residents are feeling the effects of their meters being read a week or two after a month has lapsed. Finding then that they have exceeded their allotted quota (before penalties). ekurhuleni apparently hasn't been shy to slap penalties for going over a certain amount of kiloliters oblivious to the fact that they are reading meters 35 or 40 days after their last reading. I'd guess the restrictions are still in place for profit.
You guys get it
Because if we have drought again next summer, we want to have as much water as possible.

Prevention is better than cure.
You are aware that the dry spell of the past years, on a meteorological level, is over..?

1pm Vaal : 83,8% at 1600m3sec inflow. Tailed off a lot already.

What will the impact be downstream from vaal when its full and overflow at 2000+ cubic meter per sec

I was down at the orange River Mouth on Sunday, the river is currently full and the colour has turned Orange/muddy due to the water arriving from up country.

It is the Fish River that flows through southern Namibia that is adding more water into the Orange. The confluence of the Fish and Orange is about 110km upstream from the mouth!

About two months back this part of the Orange was not flowing, stagnating, so it is a relief to see the muddy water flowing into the Ocean again.

If the rain continues in thee Transvaal and Southern Namibia, we might get a flood.....Long overdue....

It is about the maximum flow rate that the river system can handle below the Vaal dam up to the next barrier (The Barrage) and then on to the other dams. It is not a trivial exercise to try and calculate how much water should be let out of the Vaal dam while you can to cater for the inflow and ensure when the rains are over, all the dams are full and not cause the rivers to burst their banks.

The exact same thing is going to happen below the Bloemhof dam, an so on.

I would not be too happy and complacent if I had a holiday home on the banks for the Vaal right now.

Into Bloemhof if im not mistaken which is sitting at 63%.

Yup once Vaal closes in on 100% then the gates open to start filling up Bloemhof...

Apparently most of the dams in the North West are nearing capacity

Time to lift the stupid restrictions. They should still punish wanton wastage because water should still be used wisely.

Yes R13... YES, for a change we agree. Now go tell that to your people in the government. Throw your weight around a bit.

On a side-note. This thread is about what??? perhaps the mods should change the heading :)

I have no people in government.

Downstream will be flooding. A few years ago people were using canoes in Three Rivers it was that badly flooded. Properties close to the river only showed rooftops sticking out. It was real bad.
