A barrage is a type of low-head, diversion dam which consists of a number of large gates that can be opened or closed to control the amount of water passing through the structure, and thus regulate and stabilize river water elevation upstream for use in irrigation and other systems. The gates are set between flanking piers which are responsible for supporting the water load of the pool created. While the term barrage is borrowed from the French word meaning a dam generally, its usage for such a structure in English is chiefly in Pakistan, India, Egypt, Iraq, and other countries in the Middle East.

I was asking more for a technical answer.

Is the thing called a barrage at the Vaal and actual barrage, or a dam?
The vaal barrage dam is most likely a barrage dam?
The Vaal dam itself is a dam with a wall and sluice gates and river valves.

Some auntie in the know said on 702 earlier the Vaal dam levels will not be positively affected by the rain yesterday as it fell outside of the catchment area.

Depends what rain you're talking about. The storm in edenvale, she's 100% right. But that's not the only place it rained :p

It is a Barrage. It has always been called the Barrage, and is as described in your quote. the Vaal dam is upstream from that and is a dam in the true sense of the word as described in your quote.
