Valke run into quota problems

from news24

Cape Town - The Valke were on Saturday docked the points recorded against the Golden Lions after not adhering to the requisite for black players, which saw the Lions advance to the quarter-finals of the SA sevens tournament at the Florida Park fields in Parow.

The Valke fielded only two black players in the second half of a match they won 12-10, but after an appeal by the Lions the result was set aside. This saw the Valke drop down to last place in the Pool - as was the case last year, when they didn't win a single match.

The Lions will now meet defending champions Boland in the quarters.

Most impressive on the day was the star-studded Western Province side, but they will have to get past KwaZulu Natal, who were impressive after a slow start.

Surprise of the day, however, were the Pumas, who ended their pool unbeaten and will square up to their North Region champions, the Blue Bulls. In the remaining match, the Free State play South Western districts in a match the Currie Cup champion province should win comfortably, judged on yesterday's form.

Springbok coach Paul Treu on Saturday said he had identified a few players who could form a back-up to his present Springbok squad, who assembled in Cape Town for preparation for the IRB World Sevens Series on Saturday.

The standard of play on Saturday, however, was not always of a high standard due to a very strong wind that spoiled it for the players and spectators alike.

In the women's section, the quarters will be played between Western Province and KwaZulu Natal, the Blue Bulls and Eastern Province, Free State and Border B, and Boland and the Golden Lions, who were the surprise package with an unbeaten run.

Soon our currie cup will also be finished. The government just can't keep it's sick hands off our rugby. It's disgusting.

the government is forcing black players on team, yet there is no rugby development in the townships?

i dont get the way they work

build your black rugby force up from ground roots, dont force team to play guys because of their colour

well i guess one way to get at the afrikaaners is destroy rugby

plz lets not get into whole race thing, just saying that can be their only motive for this

The fact is rules are rules and the Valke were stupid for not following them. Anyway 7s is a completely different game and I for one have no problem with quotas at that level because it will make it easier to find good players for the main formats later.

ok wait

Did i read this right ? There is 7 players on the field and they had 2 black players on the field ?

lmao....

Which means 5 players where white. That is about correct if you look at the support base of the rugby in this country

What is SARU doing to ensure that there is township development? Since 1995 there issue of quotas/number of blacks has been known by the rugby executive. It seems to me that they are not being serious if they have done nothing to make sure it becomes less of an issue.
