Hey guys, I have a friend who wants me to test and value a Dell Server.

He is a salvage merchant and they recovered this Dell Server from a crashed Truck. It was the only thing that survived the crash and was written off by the insurance.

It's a Dell Server in a rack... I haven't opened the box yet, but these are the specs if you can make any sense out of it...

ERP System
6 x 300 G Drives
2 x 68 G operating system
2G RAM

Ref. HJ568-KITRCKRL R/V
5V-SL-P2900
SERVER D5-W 694J KN816

I dunno what all those numbers mean...

The sticker on the back says MS Server 08 1 to 4 CPU

Any idea how much it is worth? Or what it would be used for?

I'll try and get a picture of it and add to this post.

Try establish what the Service Tag (serial number) of the machine is - it should be a 7 digit alpha-numeric for example 9K40W1J. Then you can go to:
http://support.dell.com/support/top...my_systems_info/details?c=us&cs=28&l=en&s=dfb and put the Service Tag in there. This will give you a lot of info on the machine. You could then use the online Dell config to build the same machine and get a precise value.

It is a Dell PowerEdge 2900 with a 2Ghz Quad Core CPU.

I just booted it up and it boots fine.

You could always use the dell site to build a server with the same specs, that should give you an idea of what it would cost new.

OK, nearest I can figure... it comes to about $8,668.00

or R 63,276.40

Does that sound about right?

Yeah, sounds right. It's an old model though. Dell are on the R series servers.

I would say the current value would be between 20 and 25k I would call 0117097700 and give them the tag number and find out what warranty is left.

Great! Thanks!

OK, it says that the shipping date was 15/4/2009 from Europe.

Next Business Day Support is from 14/4/2009 to 14/4/2010 (208 days left)
ProSupport for End Users and 4 hr Mission Critical is from 15/4/2009 to 14/4/2012 (939 days left).

Yikes... when I change to the South African option and re-enter the same specs it comes out R82,500.00 !!!

Yeah, I just checked Dells website and it is a current model. My bad.

Not sure if there is a business out there that would buy an off the back of the truck (pun intended) high end server

Ja, I figure with 60% of the warranty left ... and the possible damage...

not worth more than R40,000.00.. but who on earth is going to pay that for a Server which you can build yourself for twenty or thirty grand.

Half the value is just for the DELL logo on the front anyway.

Make no mistake, it's a very nice server with lots of space for storage. Great for file and print/SQL or even exchange for a few thousand users.
