Probably comes with a lot of baggage at that price.

You guys know what wheels I am currently seeing for relative cheapness these days?

The W204 C-Class (sedan & even estate). Both tranny options.

Circa 2008/9/10. C180 K, C200 K.

Crappy Jap gearboxes? made by asin? those dont last long.
weren't there a few recalls already?
Might have to take back my statement. It's not a POS Jatco transmission afterall

When they fitted the replacement 'box they found the front mount was completely shot. I have been chasing a knocking sound while cornering under braking for years - since 2017 in fact - could not find any suspension issues.
If that knocking is gone when I get the car back - then that Aisin box has been a real trooper for holding on so long. The fact that it died after 1km on a cobblestone road makes me think it could be the smoking gun.

I guess that will leave us with Japs 1, GM 0.

when you build something from the ground up to be reliable, and the focus of your efforts from day 1 is make it last as long as Humanly possible,
not concerned about Money or prestige, you build quality stuff.

GM and Europe and America does the opposite, and that's why their stuff falls apart in front of your eyes.

ill take my statement back when I see Mujaheddin from Iraq driving around in a (modern) Peugeot bakkie with a 50 Cal on the back,
as I do realize Peugeot used to make amazing Cars, but then stopped and made Garbage with a steering wheel.

If you haven't seen it, you might find this interesting.

I think most modern cars are good and everyone makes mistakes.
I mean, there is Jatco, but even they turn out some good stuff most of the time. :sneaky:

decent looking vehicles, how were they long term wise?

They’re kinda hot property now, the issue is if the previous owner(s) actually ran the recommended maintenance otherwise you’re in for a big bill. I’m fairly sure parts are on the more pricey side. Engines are good runners I believe.

That is nice! We alked through while we waited for them to do a test drive in the Astra, lots of awesome bargains if you can put up with the maintenance. Good "range" of Rangies as always, beat up Crossfire, a few other rarities.

I'll probably be back there shortly as my mom wants to get rid of her W203 for a B-class. I'm trying to sway her to anything A (CLA, GLA, A, etc) but she is a hard headed old lady and this will be her last car.

A lot, it felt like, but that's just the nature of the 4-speed.

Going back to that car after a driving a 6-speed manual it always feels too slow. That said under the right condition it can power slide, it was wet on Thursday and I entered the new slip-way at AF Louw too vigorously with this old car, it kicked down to 1st and held it as the redline while the front wheels fought for traction throughout the turn. The car does not have ESP but it seems to have something in place to prevent upshifts if it detects wheelspin, extremely predictable understeer makes such manoeuvre easy.

Many many moons ago I made this video showing just how tall those gears are. Hopefully the next owner also gets 170,000km out of it - maybe even more.
