My dad recently got a vodacom datacard (E620) for work use and I wondered how the MTN EGDE was like here (no 3G), so I tried my ancient 16K MTN sim and my dad's more recent MTN sim that he uses in his phone (don't know the size) but the vodafone software that shipped with the card doesn't manage to connect with either MTN sim :(

I set up a GPRS-only profile and set the APN to 'internet' (I also tried 'mymtn') but when it tries to connect it returns an error 678, which apparently means "no answer" or that it wasn't able to handshake. I see that it has selected the MTN-SA network, and it shows a signal, but the section in the status bar of the dialler program that says what network it's connected to simply says "Acquiring" all the time.

Anyone know how I can connect using this card and an MTN sim? Someone told my dad that it has to be a 64K SIM, but I'm sceptical of that. Is that true?

Check your Card settings. If you are set to 3G only you will not connect in an EDGE area.

Set it to 3g preferred or EDGE preferred.
For the APN try "mtninternet" mine works with "mymtn"

I assume you have activated the SIMs for WAP

Good day,

Is this sorted or are you still having a problem?

Seems the datacard is LOCKED

I tried using the MTN F@astcard dialler and it asks for an unlock code when I try the MTN sim, though it seems happy on the VC sim. Sooo... it seems the card is locked to vodacom :(

Anyone know how to unlock it? :o

I can use gprs with the built-in browser on my phone, and with Opera Mini, and I can send and receive MMSs from my phone, so my MTN sim should be "data-ready".

In the VC dialler software I did set it to GPRS-only when trying my MTN sim.

If the VC data card is blocked then you'll have to take it into one of the vodacare centre's I think or call the vc call centre..............
