VCL language problem

A while ago, in some thread that I cannot find now, I mentioned that my VLC is displaying some things in an Asian language. I have still not been able to resolve this, but, last night I got a hint. I decided to wipe google desktop, as I don't use it (old habits die hard, I tend to drop to a terminal and use find to find stuff). Opening up the Google update thingy, I noticed that Google Desktop's entry was entirely in some Asian language.

This reminded me of something. Some time ago, in another thread, someone mentioned an app that will remove the extra languages and architectures from OSX. Can't remember the app's name - please remind me if you know what I'm talking about. I think I might have messed something up with this.

Just a theory. When Leopard comes out I'll do a fresh install and then I'll know :D
 
What r u using vlc for?
Quicketime plays everything, with the right codecs.
And the latest (free) version goes fullscreen.

Nothing, actually. I don't find it particularly good. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not as good as I expected it to be (having used it on and off on Linux, BeOS, and Windows for 5 or so years.

I own Quicktime Pro, so I can do the fullscreen anway, but I cannot, for the life of me, get it to play everything. Some xvid/divx stuff it just doesn't want to do. Some straight forward mpeg (I posted about this) it just doesn't recognise.

But for everything that Quicktime won't do, MPlayer works just fine. I'm not all that happy with the graphical MPlayer build either - I really expected the program as a whole to be graphical, but it turns out it's just a gui with mplayer running in slave mode. When you play right through a file, mplayer itself quits, so if you press play again, nothing happens.

I've been using MPlayer on Linux since almost the very beginning, and really, it is by far the most capable player. And by far the easiest on resources.
 
I don't. I installed the whole lot before and ended up with some conflict that caused Quicktime to max the CPU and do little else whenever I open a divx/xvid file.

For now I'm happy, but I bookmarked those - will give them another look when I load Leopard :)
 
Is that the latest version of quicktime u got?
Maybe uninstalling/reinstalling will fix.
But u probably tried that, and it sounds like a "windows" problem as I type this.:)

I`ve been scoping leopard out for a while.
Don`t see anything worth paying +-R900 (I think) for.
But like the other fanboys, I`ll probably buy it anyway...
 
This *is* on my Mac. Haven't touched windows since last year. Use the Mac at home, and Linux on my notebook and at work.

I did fix it by waiting until the Updater told me there's a new version, deleting all the codecs from the Library directory, installing the update, and installing Perian after.

Yes, it's the latest. Anyway, no big problem at the moment. I don't get much time for watching movies on the computer anyways. And even if I had time, my DVD player can play divx/xvid - much better on the TV!
 
I should really have said "bigger" instead of better. I have a 19" 1440x900 LCD on the Mac, so DVDs and stuff actually look pretty good. It's just much more convenient to lie on the couch and stare at the bigger screen.
