VDSL - Feedback

Not too sure on the overheads but check my sig for a 40Mbps speed test.

All depends what ISP you are going with as well. Afrihost is having massive issues at the moment. I might be leaving for Web Africa soon.

Yea, I'm scratching my head over choosing an ISP. I'm currently on Afrihost's 10mb Business account and am in Durban, and have had virtually no issues compared with the rest of the country.

I heard great things about Vox's Fat Pipe product, but was disappointed to find out they they are now having issues as well, which I experienced 1st-hand with a 50gb test account on my current line (mostly unstable, especially with Netflix). What a pity.. their latencies (gaming on EU servers) were certainly better than Afrihost's, but if Netflix is going to occasionally struggle to buffer 240p, then we have a problem.

I'm thinking of either staying with Afrihost (or moving to Axxess) seeing as I don't seem to have any streaming issues with them (MTN), but I would have liked to have 'upgraded' the latency side of things. How is WebAfrica for VDSL? I'm not keen for IS's star-rating system, but my usage should be between 200gb - 300gb.. so maybe it won't matter?

I am guessing your ping is bad with Afrihost due to their international line terminating in Cape Town, Mweb has one that terminates Durban. I am in exactly the opposite side, ~160 ping to LoL EuW

This is what I'm talking about

PM TelkomZA. You might have been cut over but the VDSL options aren't aways immediately available.

What's "Dp"?

Dont worry guys after many phone calls to our dear friends at telkom they finally woke up and realized the upgrade had been done, and moved my line results below :)

Funny Thing though the telkom adsl checker and the demand register still show my max on the line is 4mbps. Guess they still need to update

That looks like 20Mbps adsl2+ right

Yes it is to far from exchange to get switched to VDSL, Telkom told me i have to be within 1km and i am 1,4km away.
Is this correct, do i need to be within 1km?

No that sound like rubbish if you ask me. Maybe you don't have VDSL in your area and they opted to put you on the 20Mbps profile? If that is not the case and you do have VDSL available then I don't think 1.4km is far from the exchange considering you are running @ full 20Mbps ADSL2+ why would VDSL be too far?

It Currently says my area is not enabled for 20/40mbps but as yo can see after many days struggle and confirmation from local telkom techies it is enable, it also sounded like a bull story when they told it to me.
Me Thinks telkom yet again have not done proper training and the guys at the call center don't know whats going on.

Would my line stats allow 40mbps if i got them to change it to VDSL?

I don't think so. You might get 26-30Mbps but your stats might improve if they actually switch you over to VDSL. Even if they switch you over to VDSL and you keep 20Mbps you will see a slightly higher download speed that you are getting now and 2.5Mbps upload speed I think it is.

People also said that VDSL feels more snappy on the internet compared to ADSL2+ but I can't confirm this. You are currently on adsl2+ 20Mbps profile so if you change to VDSL you need a VDSL router. So it is really up to you.

If I could get VDSL I would choose 20Mbps VDSL over 20Mbps adsl2+

From what I saw somewhere a few weeks ago, 800m for 40Mbps VDSL, 1200m for 20Mbps VDSL.

I already went out and got telkom pace router my only problem now is getting them to change line to VDSL.
But how do i do this seeing as telkom are not willing to even give it a try seeing as i am 1.4km from exchange???

I think you need to pm TelkomZA rep here for some assistance. No other way or log a fault and let the technician that comes out switch you over to VDSL. You are 1.4km from the exchange okay fine but your stats looks very good and there would be no reason why you can't be switched over to VDSL if it is available.....

If this is true, it's an incredibly disappointing limitation. VDSL will only ever be available to a select few. Guess I'll have to wait for FTTH to reach my area one day.

Note that the MSANs can do VDSL, ADSL2+, ADSL, so 20Mbps ADSL2+ may be available at slightly longer distances, and in the worst case the MSANs will allow users who previously couldn't get 10Mbps due to distance from the exchange to get 10Mbps ADSL.
