Hi,

I recently moved and opted to go with a 40mbps vdsl line. Telkom came to my place this morning and set everything but my speeds are all over the place. I never get a higher speed than 20mbps(rarely goes that high) and it goes as low as 5mbps. Can someone give me some advice on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance

What do you mean by "line stats"? I am with afrihost (200gig capped). Bought this router today: http://www.takealot.com/d-link-dsl-224-wireless-n-adsl-vdsl2-wi-fi-router/PLID42120353

Log into your router, if there is an advanced user tab, go to that. Look for mentions of SNR or Signal Noise Margin, Attenuation and DSL Modulation type.
Mine looks like:
Code:
 DSL Modulation Type: ADSL_2plus
Annex Type: Annex A/L
	Upstream Downstream
Current Rate(kbps) 1021 10239
Max Rate(kbps) 1253 12244
SNR Margin(dB) 12.2 9.7
Are you using Wireless or Ethernet?
Have you tried a provider besides Afrihost? Their accounts are all having issues (That's just the normal capped account, I quit middle of Feb due to poor throughput/high latency).

EDIT: It should look something like this:

I think it's under the Status tab for your router.

I am using an ethernet cable. Here's a screenshot of my stats: http://www.awesomescreenshot.com/image/2360995/6e30456a44fcf4a923c609ca5fbc6940

I haven't used anther provider yet, could their service be this bad? to be constantly getting below 10mbps on a 40mbps vdsl line?

Thanks for your help.

Your line looks fine, I'd put my money on Afrihost being the issue (I outline my issue here as well, I was on an unshaped uncapped 150 GB account, had 350kbps (bits per second) on a 10Mbps line at times, sky high ping, etc.). Try the 1GB free test account from Crystal Web, I'm on their 150GB account and don't have issues anymore.

EDIT:
The image you linked, just putting it here so people don't have to follow the link:
DSL to delete.png
Code:
ADSL Mode: VDSL2-17A AnnexB
Channel Mode: Interleave
Rate Down/Up: 40 959 Kbps/3 071Kbps
Attenuation Down/Up dB: 25/16
SNR Margin Down/Up dB: 8.8/25.2
CRC Errors: 40
Output Power Down/Up: 13.5/5.5

Also make sure that u are on VDSL. It took me days to go onto VDSL. They still had me under ADSL. And if im not mistaken ADSL only goes to around 20MBps. The contact centre even told me they dnt have VDSl , lol. TelkomZA helped me out on this forum, im not sure if he is still around.

As already stated it is not your line or modem. AH needs to be approached so that they can check your configuration in their systems.

Just below the adsl mode your line speeds are quoted as about 3 Mb/s up and over 40Mb/s down.

Good luck with that.

So i phoned Telkom and they did a port reset, i did a speed test and it went up to 36mbps, its averaging at that speed, i assume with the "best effort service" that is the best i am going to get? I'll try out the Crystal web account and see if its any different.

Thanks again for all your help.

36 is probably what you will peak at, as you won't get a full 40 in terms of a speedtest. Overheads etc

Unbelievable how many are convinced that a port reset fixes anything!

36 Mb/s out of a 40 Mb/s line? 4 Mb/s overhead? 10% Just to handle a speedtest?

Seems i am back to square one. Its hardly ever going over 10mbps when doing a speed test. I am going to sign up for a free account from a different isp and see if that may be the issue.

10% for anything. It's how packets work, each one must have a header saying what it is and where it's headed. You have the same on Ethernet, your 1Gbps switch is probably around 970Mbps. The overheads for ADSL are 10-15% of line speed, VDSL are 6-12% (all estimates). You have the same on a 10Mbps line.

at least you can get VDSL i was on 20mb VDSL, needed to downgrade for a few months and when I tried to go back to 20mb line again i got told this wont be possible anymore as my line now does not support it the end, tried to get them to sort it out and eventually just gave up as all i got was "sorry nothing we can do" Telkom superior service as usual

I used a free account from web africa today and didnt notice a difference, steam downloads were download at 1mbps which is what i got when i had a 10mb line. i see that my download speed in my router has decreased to 36mbps, see here: http://www.awesomescreenshot.com/image/2365029/3ddd7a7fc79fbbc619a237cac9e0c7a4

I am going to file a ticket with Telkom tomorrow. Are there any other possible soultions you can give?

Again, thanks for your help.

Your SNR is way above the 6dB limit, not sure why you're syncing at 36Mbps now.
Are you sure you don't have a bandwidth limiter currently enabled? The steam cache is local, so you should be getting full speed.

Spoke to telkom today and they said they can see their is interference with the line, for some reason when someone calls my landline the internet goes off and the call seems to die, i suspect the technician didnt set everything uo properly. Could you tell me how i would go about looking to see if i have a bandwidth limiter? and where i can start looking for reasons as to why im syncing lower than i was?

Again thanks for your help.
