Hi,

Since VDSL is incredibly new to me, I would like to find out what I should be looking for when I am shopping for a VDSL router please?

These are my requirements:

  • Must have WiFi
  • Must be able to split connection across three homes
  • Homes are about 20m apart from one another. Do I run CAT5 from router or does it use other technologies?
  • If I decide to move service providers, I must be able to use the router on any other network provider, not locked down to any specific provider like Telkom.
  • Would I need to boost that signal at any point if homes are 20m apart?

Essentially, we will be splitting the costs of the VDSL between three homes and I need to find out what I should consider when doing this?

Many thanks

Go for the Pace from Telkom. I have one and it is really stable with good WiFi. I have 20 Mb line and get download speed of 2.4 Mb/s and 8 Ms ping in Erasmuskloof.

I wish I knew my neighbors to split an uncapped VDSL account with them ;) Also considering a VDSL router, and the Pace from Telkom looks about the best.

I'd consider running ethernet from the router to the 2 other homes, and buy 2 cheap Wireless N Access Points attached to the ends to boost the signal. Thats if the current signal from the Pace isn't sufficient, but at 20m apart you probably would be fine with just the Pace's range.

For the other point, It's probably unlikely that routers would be 'locked' to a service provider like Telkom.

I agree on the Pace modem from Telkom (Model 921 VNX) it has a 60 meter range and is very stable and fast -
I have a 20Mbs VDSL line and never get less than 18.5 Mbps on a speed test anywhere in the house upstairs or downstairs... My old D-Link needed a range extender to get my WDTV Live media player working downstairs.

Something decent like the top-of-the-range TP Link router - they are excellent, colleague has one, model W8980 - he says it works like a bomb and he has 10mbps adsl. He was told your smaller routers cannot handle 10mbps - e.g. netgear and D-Link, that's why he went for the TP-Link.
