I am interested in upgrading to VDSL. I called Afrihost and they told me that i would not need to upgrade my modem hardware, which i was very surprised about...

I have a Netgear DGN2200Mv2TELKOM modem/router.

Can anyone confirm this is the case. Does VDSL use the same hardware as ADSL? Will I need to upgrade my modem or not?

You need a special VDSL modem/router since they one you have the same as mine can only do up to ADSL2+ which is max 24 mbit so wont do VDSL.

Is it possible to use an ADSL2+ modem up until 20Mb, and then just upgrade if you want 40Mb..? Some guy said he was syncing at 24000Kbps, which could support this.

Sure he wasnt using Adsl2+ profile not VDSL cause 24000kbps is the max of Adsl2+.

From my understanding although ADSL2+ and VDSL2+ can operate together from the same street cabinet, they are not usually used together as the difference in frequencies increases crosstalk noise. Telkom may be using both technologies simultaneously but I doubt it.

@jackshiels: How well does the Afrihost 40Mbps service perform? I must say that I would probably take this offer if 40Mbps was available in my suburb.
