First to post!

So, what is the expected overhead on VDSL vs ADSL. I hear if I have 20meg VDSL I should expect about 20meg throughput?

Ta

At the end of the day you're looking at between 13 and 15% overhead, compared to 17% on ADSL.

That's nice. Higher than my max speed:

When I got my 20Mbit line last year I used to get just over 19Mbps in the beginning, then it started to dip slightly and plateau'd at the mid 18's.

How long have you been connected at 40Mbit?

WTF a new sub forum :) just a shame waiting for Telkom means that this won't benefit me any time soon.

Ofcourse it will benefit you aswell as me and many others. Knowledge is Power :D.

Does anyone know if the 20Mbps ADSL2+ profile work with existing ATM/ADSL2+ exchanges? Since we not getting any VDSL/MSAN upgrades coming this year and possibly next year, it maybe better to budget for 20Mbps if it is across all areas.

Those speedtests are so amazing, i dream of the day i will finally have that :).

Since we have seen in the past that different routers can show better stability / poor performance, can we also say that the overhead also has this to take into consideration bearing in mind that there is a limited range of VDSL modems out there which can only expand as time goes by? I would like to ask that VDSL users post in a sticky thread their VDSL modem , stats , firmware and area etc so we get an idea how things vary if marginally or not.

We did try the Afrihost business uncapped first but the speed during the day was very slow comparing to capped accounts (not more that 10Mbps). We then moved to the 500gb + 500gb capped account and its about a R1000 saving from uncapped.

Just saw on the Telkom Speed Checker that the area that we are in now supports up to 20Mbps. Currently on 10Mbps, so I guess the extra R115 per month for VDSL will be a worthy upgrade. :)

What modems are you guys using? Are there any options besides the Pace 921VNX VDSL router from Telkom at R1,249? Or is that just about the best option?

Yes it does. My line is currently sync'ing at 20Mbps using ADSL2+ (no MSAN infrastructure in my area)
Speedtest is 17.6Mbps down, 0.86Mbps up (IIRC).

@Mr.Jax thanks :). Going to save up and upgrade in September once all finances are taken care of. Stuck on 3G for awhile so anything higher than what i used on 10Mbps is welcomed. One Thing though is that we are just over a KM from the exchange but i see my stats have somewhat improved last time i checked it.

Code:
ADSL

Mode:	ADSL_2plus
Type:	ATM
Status:	Up

 	Downstream	Upstream
Line Coding(Trellis):	On On
SNR Margin (dB):	[B]191[/B] 173
Attenuation (dB):	[B]330[/B] 176
Output Power (dBm):	0 -13
Attainable Rate (Kbps):	14596 1144
Rate (Kbps):	2048 507
D (interleaver depth):	1 1
Delay (msec):	0.25 0.24

HEC Errors:	0 4
OCD Errors:	0 0
LCD Errors:	0 0

Total ES:	1 0
That was with an uptime of 5 days 10hrs which isn't too bad. Attenuation is worrisome but i have high hopes close to 16Mbps will be stable as the SNR goes to 12 dB when syncing at 10Mbps.

We haven't tested 20Mbps ourselves, but we're using the pace on our 10Mbos office line. Most of us in the office find it quite frustrating.

Telkom will be offering a new vdsl modem soon, which will be cheaper and have more features, I think 802.11ac wifi, fttx support (can't remember if the pace has this), and will support features Telkom is trialling (which may or may not br commetcialised).

If you want 20Mbps+ now the pace is about the only option, but we expect the new modem in about 3 months.

I believe Telkom will only offer > 10Mbps on vdsl or fibre, not adsl2+, and the backhaul must be converted to metro ethernet.
