I currently live in a single storey/level and have a Linksys wireless card connecting to a media streamer in the room next door (6m).

I'm looking at moving to a double story complex and the PC will be in the upstairs room streaming to the media server to the lounge below (about 8m).

Will the streaming vertical still work ? Does signal get effected ? Its double storey - so the floor is solid ... does it make a difference ?

It will make a big difference. you will have to test to see how badly it will be affected. and take steps to improve the signal if it is not usable.

signal will vary depending on the thickness of the floor and number of steel/cables in it.

the wireless signal is transmitted in a lobe, so if antenna orientation is vertical, devices on the same height next to it will have the best reception. turn your antenna horizontally for better vertical reception.

signal can also bounce of walls quite nicely. try placing the antenna close to a window if you have a wall outside.

you can find more info and wifi guru's at jawug.

I built a Intellon ethernet over power chip into a device I was developing and it works like a dream till you span across distribution boards....
Anyway check your signal thru the floor before doing anything. If you dont get a good signal load DD WRT on the Linksys and up the radio power or get a patch antenna and stick it on the outside wall.

Right. Moved in and, although the signal says 60%, it doesn't seem to work fantastically. I need to boost this somehow, and I've tried turning antenna horizontally.

I have a Linksys wireless PCI card connected ad hoc to the streamer. I also have an idle Linksys WAG300N wireless router. Would I be correct in assuming the WAG300N is more powerful and I should try that? I know it can be used as an AP - can be it be connected adhoc as well?
