Guys im planning on being a WISP on a very small scale max 100 customers.

Im based somewhere in the Free State Province, the radius of my client base is 3 km.

All my clients are in a residential area.

Here is a list of services i want to provided any advise will be appreciated.

All clients can VOIP in the network only, no external calls.
All clients can use IM in the network only, no external gateways.
All clients can play games in the network.

Will this equipment be sufficient for my deployment.

3 X 13dBi 2.4Ghz 120 Degree Sector Antenna [UNI2413S-120]
3 X DBii Networks 802.11bg High Power Wireless Interface Card [F20]
1 X Mikrotik RB/433AH [RB/433AH]
1 X Outdoor Enclosure Large

I want to mount the antenna 15 meters above the ground

I know i need a licence from ICASA im busy working on that.

Any suugestions?

Hi, and welcome to the forum! :)

I think you'd be able to use an Asterisk server for the VoIP and IM needs, with the game server running on the same PC (if it's powerful enough).

Mikrotik is the widely used brand and imo has the best OS when compared to ubiquity as far as routing capabilities are concerned. Ubiquity routers i heard tho can be flashed with DD-WRT, but I havn't played around with that, much prefer routerOS.

As far as ubiquity equipment is concerned, I think they starting to show stronger than mikrotik. Installed 3 Ubuity Rockets with 17dbi sectors on them, combined size of the router and the sector is just over a ruler length (width about 8cm) so they very unobtrusive. Also we have a link between two sites with these rockets on either end, sector - sector and getting over 40mbps true throughput... something i doubt mikrotik could do unless its grid-grid.

But go with what you can afford, either brand will be a good choice.

You'll need more than 3 interfaces to support that many customers. And you'll need more than 1 tower too.

Why 2.4 Ghz? Interference? Crowded? General Limitations.

For Licensing I will recommend:

Anyone looking to get a full cost for this on license-free spectrum using carrier-grade equipment, including installation and configuration, then send me a PM and I can get a quote out to you to do this.

We can also provide you with the backhaul and internet breakout...
