VGA cables and data projector

I have an Acer data projector and bought myself 10m and 5m of VGA cable (same brand, for the life of me I can't remember who) to connect it on the PC for presentations. The projector only has VGA, S-video, Composite and USB ports.

The problem is the cable only allows 640x480 display resolution, and I know it is the cable since I tried it (the 5 and 10m cables) on a VGA LCD and the same results, 640x480.

Is there then a certain brand that one should get? What should I ask for to get the "right" cable that will allow for full resolution?

The VGA cable that came with the LCD monitor works perfectly and displays all the resolutions of the monitor and the projector, so I'm 100% sure it is the VGA cable that is messed up.

If the cable supplied with the projector works, then yes, our cables will work fine all the way up to 30 Metres

Money back guarentee if they don't :)

We don't know what OP means by saying "only allows 640x480 display resolution". It could mean either that VGA driver doesn't allow to select another resolution, or resolution can be selected, but screen doesn't look good or just fail to synchronize (means no display). In the last case it could be solved by manually selecting proper refresh rate (using advanced->monitor option). I bet on this case, as it works on original cable.

It seems the cables do not correctly transfer the EDID information from the projector to the PC (Linux). I do not know if this is a cable flaw (the original cable works, 1.8m) or if the EDID data signal gets lost over a certain distance?

Anyway...
I had to configure X server to disable EDID lookup on Nvidia and setup a custom two monitor config with the desired resolutions. This is no elegant solution, but it works.

Glad to hear it is solved.

Re: lost EDID. Most likely cable is missing extra wires (I saw such cables) or a wire is broken. There is no reason why EDID wouldn't work on longer distances. It runs at very low speed, PC serial port alike.

My guess was wrong, but advice correct, right? :)

Edit: I believe, it is difficult to say...
