Once again Virgin cannot provide a data service. Nobody can tell me why it is down or when it will come back. They blame Cell-C & won't let anyone from the data section speak to me either.

OK, at least they know there is a problem. This is really a pitiful service.
Back to my trusty MTN backup sim.:p

Yep. Been down for most of the day. Only managed to get online now and it is sooo slow. So much for Cell C's new MPLS network that is supposed to carry all their data. I am getting so bleak. Is it that hard to keep the network up?

Why don't we start an uptime counter in this thread and get someone (someone reliable, that is) from each of the other networks to do the same so we can finally settle the dispute as to which provider has the most reliable service. We can count the amount of uptime over a period of 6 months or so and then work out a percentage.

In my opinion, Vodacom still has the most reliable and effective service, but reliability and quality both come at a steady price. :(

Same this side. This morning between 7 - 10am I got downloads speeds that I never get here at my place, was thinking it's Xmas.

After 10am everything came to a halt, haven't been able to connect to VM as yet today - no explanations given. The answer always is "We will get back to you" - which never happens.

Why don't we stop making unsubstantiated claims and do a scientific study. I had 9 hours downtime today on VM from 10AM to 7PM and, as far as I could tell, no downtime on Vodacom. Anyone want to update my figures? I'm going to continue counting for about a month and then do everything again the month after that. I'd like some help with Vodacom downtime stats, as I'm mostly on VM.

I disagree. The GPRS service provided to prepaid Vodacom customers is shocking. It's almost always unavailable! I changed from Vodacom to MTN for this exact reason. I have only had problems with MTN's GPRS once in the past 4 months.

Prepaid is always a problem when data comes into the picture. Vodacom prepaid subscribers are actually lucky they have GPRS, since Cell C don't even offer the service to their prepaid clients.

Whoa, are you telling me Cell C doesn't offer prepaid GPRS?

I have the same experience.
I spoke to a quite charming rep called SHANE. HE said "I'm not like the rest, I will definitely call you back. When I promise to call back I ALWAYS do!!".

You guessed it. Never heard a sausage from them! Phone on all the time etc..

I'm going to call him SHAME next time he answers.:D
LOL

Cell C offers GPRS and EDGE on prepaid but you can't buy bundles, so at R2/MB

Where did you hear that? I'm using a Cell C backup sim with R21. No GPRS. When I phoned the helpdesk they told me that Internet is not available on prepaid.

Yes, it is. I used it for a few months. Call again. Just ask that GPRS be enabled on your number. Don't mention anything about prepaid.

Visit cellc's site you can enable it online, should be working in an hour

but why would you want to use cellc for gprs?

I'm chatting on MXit with a friend on Cell C prepaid and she definitely has GPRS.

I've had a cellc prepaid sim a few months ago
and yes you CAN enable GPRS

Like I said just register on the site to enable it

Internet Must Be Free

All the networks are just not up to par in africa.I think its time we all came together in a group and told those big corperate monsters that enough is enough,WE DEMAND FREE INTERNET!For those unaware my internet has been free for 8 days.I dont know how but doubtfully forever. And when they do go back to charging me, even 50c p meg is still too much! The inventer of the internet wanted it free to all and he got screwed! Not a penny for him.The day they charge is the day i fight and at the end of the day knowledge is power! If you disagree challenge me!

I just spoke to VM a couple of minutes ago cuz I'm getting zero signal at all (can't make voice calls) - they tell me that they're aware that GPRS is down again, but are not aware of any voice issues in my area (Boksburg).

I have been complaining about the 0 signal in the germiston area for months- nobody can tel me why it happens- maybe they have a tjing against the eastrand
