Virgin internet speed test.

Hi all, I put my virgin mobile simcard into my Motorola v360v, and tested the speed. The first test is with the network set to cell c:
First 128K 14484 msecs: Download speed = 9049 Bytes per sec, Approx = 75K bits per sec
Second 128K 15079 msecs: Download speed = 8692 Bytes per sec, Approx = 72K bits per sec
Third 128K 21000 msecs: Download speed = 6242 Bytes per sec, Approx = 52K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 10171 msecs: Download speed = 12887 Bytes per sec, Approx = 107K bits per sec
And the second test are with the network set to vodacom:

First 128K 31 msecs: Download speed = 4228129 Bytes per sec, Approx = 35178K bits per sec
Second 128K 31 msecs: Download speed = 4228129 Bytes per sec, Approx = 35178K bits per sec
Third 128K 32 msecs: Download speed = 4096000 Bytes per sec, Approx = 34079K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 31 msecs: Download speed = 4228129 Bytes per sec, Approx = 35178K bits per sec

Can someone just tell me according to this test results, if I have edge coverage? It does not show on the phone if I have edge coverage, but this test looks good for me. Pls help me.

it's clear that the second test was done without your clearing the cache.

otherwise speeds of 35178K bits is absolutely impossible because thats 35 mbps !
the first set of results seems like edge - i say this bec of the 107 kbps - gprs is less than this i think!

Yeah seems like EDGE, not particularly good EDGE speeds though. What speed test was that?

I did the test with http://212.19.68.252/speed.html , but I'll do it again and post the results, but how do I clear the cache? I'm using firefox 2.

Go to Tools > Delete private data and there'll be an option there to clear the cache.

Okay, I got it, I cleared the cache, and did the test again. The first was with the vodacom network selected:

First 128K 47578 msecs: Download speed = 2755 Bytes per sec, Approx = 23K bits per sec
Second 128K 35906 msecs: Download speed = 3650 Bytes per sec, Approx = 30K bits per sec
Third 128K 39734 msecs: Download speed = 3299 Bytes per sec, Approx = 27K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 26672 msecs: Download speed = 4914 Bytes per sec, Approx = 41K bits per sec

The second was with cell c selected:

First 128K 28766 msecs: Download speed = 4556 Bytes per sec, Approx = 38K bits per sec
Second 128K 60859 msecs: Download speed = 2154 Bytes per sec, Approx = 18K bits per sec
Third 128K 17703 msecs: Download speed = 7404 Bytes per sec, Approx = 62K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 9110 msecs: Download speed = 14388 Bytes per sec, Approx = 120K bits per sec

roaming on Vodacom you are limited to GPRS (as far as I recall), on CellC you are on Edge. Your tests also agree with what I found recently.

If Vodacom does have EDGE coverage you can use it. They just don't have that much as they focused on 3G/HSDPA.

I don't need a speed test to tell me that something is off with VM in Centurion.

It is extremely slow and patchy. Takes ages to open a page ...... local and international.
