Virgin Mobile prepares for SA debut

" its planned advertising budget, media planners say it's likely to be just over half that of Cell C, which spends nearly R160m annually. Rival MTN is SA's biggest advertiser, spending more than R350m. Vodacom spends about R250m."

With so little choice of providers they have to spend all that money to tell me which high priced cell phone contract I want.

Branson himself will be in SA for the launch

Now if someone here could meet Branson and tell him that what we need is competition and a price war, not just another high priced operator

noswal : Not sure why people think a new entrant into the cellphone industry will want to engage in a price war. That would only work for them if the industry was homogeneous (which it isn't) with consumers easily able to switch (which it isn't and never will be, even with number portability)

A price war would be stupid for Virgin. Where it might happen is from one of the established players further down the road, once the local market is saturated, and the only option for growth is poaching consumers from the competition. This is already starting to happen

will there now be a Virgin Mobile Broadband section :D

Well, considering how far behind CellC are in the data arena, I cant imagine Virgin offering broadband any time soon. I am still really curious as to why they chose CellC

Virgin Broadbank in the UK is a ripoff. Don't fool yourself into thinking Richard Branson gives a damn about us.

Richard Branson is gonna be another really mook person of the teleco industry

mook is a noun, I don't think u can use it as an adjective.

AFAIK cellC is the only cell company without significant government investment?

Yeh, but u could've said: "Richard Branson is gonna be another real mook of the telco industry!"

Mook

* A Japanese contraction of the English words magazine and book. Mook are books with the look, design, and layout of magazines. There are literally thousands of these beautiful, full color publications to be found relating to the world of anime and other topics.

* "Magazine + Book = Mook" A Japanese term used to describe magazines that cost more than a typical magazine and are generally bound more like a book and have harder covers. Gothic & Lolita Bibles, Pride Visions and special issues of Shoxx are considered mooks.

Have to say for the average user - ie not a power user - its not too bad. We've got a couple ppl on their broadband - they use less than 3gb so why should they pay more for an uncapped account they'll never need.

Besides - I wouldnt mind paying £25 for a 8mbs uncapped account.

bwana, when I was there they didn't offer an uncapped option, so I was basing my opinion on old info. Their 8mbs uncapped account for 25 quid is good value, because it's a no contract, month-to-month based thing, and if I remember correctly they also give you a free modem. I take back what I said, 'cos this is an amazing offer!

AFAIK the uncapped one hasnt been around all that long - before its introduction there were only the two other capped options available. Still - they're pretty forgiving even if you do go over your cap. Its only after repeated occurrences that they suggest you use a higher (or uncapped now) account.
