Checked my Virgin Money credit card statement online today and saw this:

2012-09-04 SNCF TGV.COM MONTRY FR -1 065.85

Strange, I don't remember using the card yet this month...?

:wtf:

Googled the merchant... Aaaarrrgggh! Some bastard in France is taking a train trip on my account!

Phoned Virgin who cancelled the card and told me my account had already been flagged for fraudulent activities. Then was told to phone ABSA's Fraud Division, who asked some questions and sent me some forms (they didn't mention anything about being flagged). I was told to destroy the card and send them proof.

Now there's going to be an investigation (which will apparently take about a week) and then, based on the merits of the case, they may or may not reverse the charge. Does anyone know if it's more likely that they'll refund me or not? I'd really rather not lose that much money. They didn't mention anything, but would it be better to open a case at the SAPS?

I've been buying online for years and this has never happened to me before. I have no idea how the fraudster got my details, so no idea how to prevent it from happening again. As far as I knew, I was doing the right things - only buying from reputable merchants, secure sessions in the browser, no clicking of spam links, etc.

When using it in shops, nobody took the card out of my sight (although I hadn't been using it much recently, anyway). It was a chipped card as well (although I doubt that's as secure as the banks want you to believe).

So, it really can happen to anyone.

Am just really really glad I said no when VM phoned me a month or so ago, asking if they could increase the limit.:erm:

Rbp misleading topic!

Sidenote,if there is clear evidence something is up like your card suddenly appearing halfway around the planet you're likely to be reimbursed

VCpay ...

I'm sure they will give your moola back. It will take more then a week

LOL

I thought the same as you ... and this would turn into an epic thread :p

Snap!

On a more serious note, you should be able to recover the monies if it's a credit card. The hurt comes depending on what charges Virgin decides to leave with you with. Some chap made off with R5,500 in cash withdrawals when my card got skimmed, I didn't have to pay it back but I got charged R230 in bank fees.

Sometimes they jut randomly type in numbers and get lucky.
Even if you do have the CC number you'd still need ~25k+ tries to cover all the possibilities. (CCV + Expiry)

One incompetent website setup is all it takes for your CC to get stolen.

Thanks for your responses, guys.

VCpay ...

Seems like a good idea, but that seems to be an EasyPay thing. Weren't they having severe problems with fraud recently? I'm sure I read something somewhere that's making me feel reluctant to trust them...

Ouch! Talk about adding insult to injury.

Someone told me the details could have been lying in some database for years (as I got my card soon after VM opened up). Even if the expiry & CCV would obviously be different now, you could work out the expiry date and 3 digits are much easier to guess than 16...? Do you even need all three when placing orders over the phone, for instance?
