I want to convert a couple of .mpg videos to .avi. Someone suggested that I should use virtualdub but I'm getting huge output files. Also the voices are lagging in my output. Played around with some settings but not getting correct output.

Hopefully there is someone here using this program to give me some pointers. I'm a bit of a newbie with this sort of thing so realy helpful guidance is required please.

Hey, I create quite a few Videos in World of Warcraft.
The method i use to compress them is here

Maybe this can help you with regards to your voice problems, it might not be exactly what you are looking for though as you just want to convert some files.

You need to have the XVID / DivX codecs installed along with an mp3 encoder (or FFDSHOW). Then in VirtualDUB go to Video>Compression (Make sure "fast recompress" mode is selected) and select a video codec (XVID/Divx/ffdshow) select an appropriate bitrate (like 1000-3000 kbps). Do the same for Audio ("full processing mode"). Save as an AVI file and sit back and wait.
