Hey,

Heres the scenario: I was helping my friend charge his ipod at my house, plugged it in and for the life of me dont know why I clicked "Images.exe" which had a folder icon. Double-clicked it, whatever it was executed, and im like "aaah how could I fall for that!!!" Now I'm sitting here with some sort of virus that wont let me run any executable file, not even windows task manager, for longer than 3seconds. The glimpse I get at the task manager shows this qm4920.exe entry that never was there before.

When I searched myadsl for previous virus threads, Firefox somehow closes before I get to read the thread, but I can read other threads fine. Can't install any anti-virus programs and Trend's house call wont work now.

System is running WinXP Pro sp2.

Any help is appreciated.

Oh, formatting/re-installing is out of the question... just backed my contacts and other data from my cellphone to pc, as the cellphones gone for repairs.

Thanks in advance.

can you get to Start.. Help & Support..... Undo Changes with System Restore ?

@ JBF - stop it right there... system restore won't help as the virus will simply reinfect the clean (repaired) copies...

It's like trying to mask the symptoms but not fixing the problem itself.

You could always slave the drive to a "protected" PC and have it scan and try to clean your drive for you
I keep a non-networked box for exactly that purpose.

Good idea there Gru.

At least you can get an idea what you're dealing with, and get the proper removal tools.

It's a P2 500 with only 256 ram and a couple of removable drive bays
Only used for virus removal and storing mp3s :D
Have to update it once a week using dial-up to keep it seperate from the network

OK!
/me stops right there!

I keep one on the network to see if any virus is trying to spread (hence the 4 anti-virus programs ;))

Running AVG, nod32 and kaspersky AV on different machines on the network to keep each other honest, but every so often you get one that slips through (specially when you underestimate lusers)

Some day an anti-virus company will release a product that detects all known virusses... It'll be cold that day because hell froze over :p

  • Go into safe mode
  • Run "msconfig.exe"
  • Unselect everything under startup tab
  • reboot
  • Install/run antivirus
  • Sorted :D

I think your problem is a "rootkit virus", and they are not easily detected by AV programs. Download "AVG Anti-Rootkit Free" from AVG's site and see what happens.
I hope this will help.
