Looking for a free Visio alternative for my son. He needs to draw standard flowcharts for school subjects, and has been using Word shapes up to now. This seems cumbersome, and he needs something better. Visio is not worth the cost for the basics that he needs it for.

My friend Google shows many different alternatives, so looking for recommendations from the good peoples of MyBB. So far my thoughts are on one of the following -
Lucidchart - Only available on-line and free version only allows for max 3 active drawings
Creately - Only available on-line but seems to not restrict the number of drawings
Pencil Project - Free standalone desktop app - but seems to have limited functionality and templates (not sure of all the limitations though)
Draw.io - Only available on-line, but seems to be one of the simpler yet most advanced tools of these I have listed.
Google Drawings - On-line only, but I'm not yet sure of any limitations.

Personally I would prefer something that can also be used off-line as well, but it's a preference, not a critical factor.

Any recommendations/comments on the the above or any other suggestions?

TIA

SmartDraw but you need to go back a few versions for the free version. You'll need to look can't remember which version is free but it was from 2013/14.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and links. I appreciate the assistance.
I have decided on Draw.io and my son has downloaded such to test out. If he's not happy with such we'll re-look at this.
