Ok so ive installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit but my ram hasnt arrived yet so im only running 2Gb now. What I want to know is why is my HDD continously doing something?? I can leave it on the desktop for the whole day, I come back and my HDD light is still going crazy? WTF? I cant play anygames cause this Harddrive doesnt stop doing something, wtf's it loading wtf its doing? Anybody know? Is it cause of my low ram or what? Im getting frustrated, how can a OS use ur Harddrive all the time when im doing nothing. Stupid Vista, im actually not liking this at all.
O btw its fully updated with SP1.

There is a tutorial I used to reduce hard drive thrashing, just disable the windows search service and indexing.

Vista is indexing. It does this at the start of each new vista install. If you don't like it there is a way to disable it.

Right-click all your hard drives in My Computer, go Properties and uncheck "Index this drive for faster searching."

Although it will automatically stop doing it if detects that you're trying to do something, like play a game.

Thanks for the replys guys, it seems to of calmed down alot.
Lol no Im never going back to XP, it just seems 90's to me hahahahahaha.
Vista rocks just need my other 2GB:D cmon Prophecy :P

You need to turn off the indexing service, right click hard drive select properties and untick index this drive, you then need to type in the box above the start button and services, double windows search and disable it.

I would also turn off automatic updates as this can also hamper vista's performance.

Strange... it was released around 2001. But I prefer Vista over XP as well, people need to move on now Vista is much better since SP1.

Lol I know it was early 2000's but XP just always remined me of Windows 98, dunno why. Vista to me is sooooo kewl, im loving everything about it. Just cant play Company of Heroes in DX10, not enough ram the Pc starts using the Hd for ram. Thanks for the help guys ;)
Must say this is one of the best forums in S.A, I love the peeps on here :D

Quick off topic question:

2gigs of RAM isnt enough to play some games? I don't play games so have no idea but surely 2gigs is enough...?

Ok guys this HD loading has come back... idexing is off or on doesnt matter it just continuously loads something, light stays on and you can hear the hd going crazy... wtf?? im getting annoyed what the p***s is this OS doing with my Harddrive? my gawd

Somewhere in the taskmanager there is this thing called performance management or something...that can show you what application/service is accessing the hdd.

svchost rapeing my hdd... continously doing something.
Call of Duty 4 doesnt work, fully updated and ses iw3mp.exe stops working.... vista se **** this is getting ridiculous

Dude you need to chill out, breathe now listen

Reload vista.

Make sure you have updated drivers for every piece of hardware in your system, this included chipset, vga and sound.

1. reload vista
2. go into control panel double click user accounts, then click on user account control on/off, untick option and reboot.
3. go into my computer right click your hdd's select properties and untick index this drive.
4. above the start button type services, double click windows search and disable it
5. click on windows update, change settings and turn off automatically check for update (do this manually as it makes svhost show up resources.
6. install everything for your pc, get the latest chipset drivers from your mobo manufacturer.
7. update vista

Now after this vista should use your hdd for around 1 minute after you reboot after that it will run smooth man.

above your start button type msconfig and click startup tab and untick anything that does not need to start up.

Thing is with vista, it takes time to learn but once you iron out your problems you will be amazed by it.

Wow shot man for that :) I know I get paranoid, you should see me with my car :/

Will this also solve my prorgams crashing cause CCC just crashed on me... cant play any games
And by Reload you mean format and reinstall? soz n00b question yet again
I just got my steam games updated for vista... 2Gb later now backup and start over AHHH FFS microsoft get a life now

Thanks for the help
