I am new to Vista but one thing that really annoys me is that avi files etc that worked just fine in XP no longer work in WMP 11 - either they don't open at all or I have sound and no video. Using web help in WMP is no help.

Can anyone recommend a good codec pack or "media player" for download? I have googled it but I'm wary of downloading random, possibly crap and or harmful software

Cause if you don't want to use Media Player classic, then you could install Vista Codec Pack that only installs codecs

VLC is cool in that it does not install anything shady into the OS itself. With some of the codec packs one can uninstall them and then the system is still screwed.

+1 for VLC

Used Media Player Classic and K-Lite Codec Pack for a long time, but lately VLC has become my favorite. I think MPC's interface and usability is much better, but those codes packs don't always play nice.

Klite codec pack allows you to set WMP as the default media player for any codec also

Vista codec pack. You can download it from the site in my sig
