Vista makes backups that can't be used...

Doesnt that waste a considerable amount of space - esp if you cant access [-]the[/-] your data?
 
*yawn* never needed to use MS Backup, never will. if it breaks, reformat, reinstall. I burn most of my stuff to DVD as soon as i get it - so pretty backed up i guess : )

I understand that but from the looks of the article it still stores multiple copies even if you dont have a version high enough to access them.

That is what is looks like, which is the problem, not the fact that you can't use those copies.
 
It is poorly implemented, granted. They should have added an option to turn this off, as the only way to disable it in Vista is to delete your System Restore points.

Maybe something to add to Service Pack 1?
 
This vista is really a disaster - people should complain.
 
Vista is junk. Only get it if you have to, ie preloaded with a new machine. Otherwise there is no benefit of buying an upgrade.
 
The previous versions feature is just part of system restore. If you have Business or Ultimate, instead of having to restore your ENTIRE system to a previous state to get something back or to undo a mistake, in you can do it on a per file basis. So it's not 'really' saving backups you can't use, you just cant restore them the same way you would in business or ultimate. I guess the only usefull part of having the previous versions tab in the Home versions is to see whether the file you want to 'undo' or get back is in fact there before having to do a system restore only to find out it wasnt saved in a restore point.

But System Restore's functions are to backup important system files, not What I did on my holiday.txt or something like that. It's only supposed to backup things in the Windows folder and, apparently, some .dll files.

I still say that it was poorly implemented.
 
The article is talking about Shadow Copies. This is a feature from Windows Server 2003. If you delete or overwrite a shared file or folder you can get it back.

I haven't checked it out properly in Vista, but at work where we run SBS 2003 its pretty useful from time to time. In SBS 2003 you can control how much disk space to use for this feature and old Shadow Copies are automatically cleaned up as necessarily.
 
Not really, Tibby - seems like you pay and pay and pay...
then realize you are better off with XP Pro :D
