It's about time to format my system drive and re-install the OS.

I see now there is talk of a Vista SP. Is it worth it going Vista or should I wait for more fixes to Vista and stick with XP?

I tested out Vista (ultimate ed) on a spare drive I had a couple of months ago and the OS itself ran ok but all my games ran terribly (i likes my games) .
Is this still the case?

What machine are you running?

I had the same result with Vista as you have so far explained. I honestly think I might wait for Windows Seven to come in 2012. Windows Vista is just not currently what its suppose to be with regards to performance.

Right now.. Windows XP Pro with SP3 (when it comes out).. maybe in id say 6 - 9 months give Vista another try. MS said that SP1 wont be fixing many performance related issues with regards to the gaming side of things.

Vista in a way looks a lot like a Windows ME from 2000.

+1

Vista SP1 will just be a combination of all the patches that you can get from windows update right now anyway with some new anti-piracy gadgets added. Vista will still run like a retarded dog after the update.

vista looks purdy, but other than that its completely useless and it over-complicates everything.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
RAM: 2GB DDR
GPU: 7800gtx
(Definitely time for an upgrade)

Yeah, gonna stick to XP me thinks.
thanks for the reply:)

if your games didn't play well then, its probably not going to play well now.

I have both Vista and XP installed..since installing Vista I havent used XP...it really isn't as bad as everyone claims. I've had no issues (except with bluetooth), but it requires that you have an internet connection and plenty of data to spare for its updates, whats nice about it is it looks for driver updates for you and installs them.
My games run fine (Orange box, CNC3, Crysis:p, NFS most wanted...)

I'd stick with XP. My experience with Vista was most unpleasant, it didn't talk to my printer, my camera, my scanner, my audio card and it had issues with one of my flash drives. It was slow (that was probably RAM-related - I was running 1GB DDR400) and seemed more than a little complicated. Those security pop-ups drove me insane and I didn't even try and play games on it. For the record, there are still no drivers for my HP printer and HP, it would appear, have no intention of writing Vista drivers for it.

So, unless you have peripherals under six months old or are prepared to replace those which don't work with Vista - stick to XP.

Stick with XP.

My older machine was more or less the same spec as yours and you will notice a decrease in framerates using Vista.

I like Vista, takes a while to get used to but now I wouldn't go back to XP. Had no problems with drivers, printers etc. Then again I don't game.

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate and promptly reinstalled Windows XP, gaming performance was terrible

if you want vista cause of the look then rather get the vista transformation pack version 8.1 .... its even got the start and search thingy working like in vista ...

Vista is a very good operating system.... Even the 64bit is more stable than the 32bit.... It had LOADS of problems in the beginning but it works fine now.... No driver issues and games on my side runs so much smoother..... On crysis, i ran 20fps faster on vista than xp.....

Windows XP SP3!!! You can download it through a torrent site, build 3244, it's great!

Vista is rubbish unless you have an uber-system. It's pretty much a commercial failure so far.

My modest system is flyiiing.
