Please can the linux guys refrain from posting in this thread about how great linux is :p

Tell me after SP1 what problems your finding with vista. For me vista is perfect and can't think of anything else they need to fix.

Vista is working great for me for over a year, and every time I have to use xp I feel like I'm going back in a time machine. My issues are still related to waking up from standby - AVG 8 shows a scan in progress (2 tray icons) when in fact it isn't scanning, and also my wireless nic shows a connection which isn't in fact a connection: two phantom processes which seem to be running but aren't.
Other than that, no issues.

I'll provide some hints:
1) Disable UAC by default.
2) Allow non-MS themes.
3) Remove DRM
4) The eye-candy gained does not justify the huge jump in requirements.
5) Install takes forever.
6) Services packs can't do a "true" slipstream only image copies.
7) OpenGL implementation is pretty much a disaster.

Finally, and most devastatingly....I don't like the Vista start button.:D:p

when i have a power failure it always goes faulty , it wont start up , blank desktop etc

I've been using Vista with SP1 for a few months now... Haven't had a single issue yet. Not even a BSOD *touch wood*

I am going to take the plunge and try install Vista on my pc. Can you run non-64bit software on 64bit Vista?

Yes. (Assuming you mean 32bit software.)

Local-area networks can be a bit of an adventure with Vista (not much more so than XP), but otherwise the only real issue I've found is the fact that it uses about half a gig of RAM more than XP for no real reason.

The biggest improvement I've noticed over XP is that manually using Windows Update is much less painful. No retarded ActiveX webpages... It has an actual Control Panel utility. :p

hack "start" to "fart"

The Vista "Start" button doesn't have any writing on it. You phail.

Interesting points raised, I agree with most, if not all, of them :)
